-Flashback-
September 1st, 1980
It was your first day of first grade.
This was the real deal now. It wasn't like kindergarten where you could play and do whatever the average 6 year old dreams of. This is elementary school, where you actually have to start learning stuff.
The first few steps of making friendships that could last a lifetime.
You and your mother stood outside of the front entrance of the school. Your nervous 6-year-old self stood shyly behind her legs, too scared to go in.
Your mom turned around and squatted down to your height. "How are you feeling sweetheart?"
Nibbling your lip, you looked over her shoulder and through the glass doors to the main entrance again. Tons of kids and their parents were walking through those doors this second; the kids were ecstatic, they just couldn't wait to start their first day of school. Why were you so nervous?
Looking back to your mom, you squeaked out a small "Nervous"
Her eyes were soft as she looked at you. "What are you nervous for honey?" her voice was gentle.
Your gaze met the floor. "W-What if...I don't make any friends?"
Your mom let out a breathy chuckle. "Don't be silly, dear". She grabbed both of your hands; you looked her in the eye. "Anybody would be crazy not to be friends with you. Now, what did we speak about?"
Your eyebrows pulled downward in thought. She mumbled the first few words to kickstart your memory. "You are kind, you are brave-"
You joined in after having a lightbulb moment, you both now spoke in unison. "You are caring, you are thoughtful. And you aren't afraid to stomp a bitch if you have to"
You both set off into a fit of giggles; she had repeated those exact words to you whenever you got nervous about situations like these.
She cupped both of your tiny hands and kissed them. "And plus, Fritz is gonna be there. I'm positive he'll be in your class" she reminded you, and you nodded. "It's okay if you don't make any friends today. You have a ton of time; if not, Fritz is 100% always gonna be there"
You stared into each others eyes for a moment; she gave you a bright smile, which you returned. You quickly embraced her, and she wasted no time in doing the same. "Everything will be okay" she whispered reassuringly in your ear.
"Thank you, momma" you mumbled into her neck. She smiled again. "Of course, my darling"
After a few moments, you broke away from your embrace. She peppered multiple kisses along your face, a few squeaky giggles escaping your lips. She looked into your eyes again, cupping your cheeks. "I love you tons and tons"
She stood up straight, putting a hand on your shoulder. "Now go get em, tiger"
———————————
It was currently recess.
Your first two classes whizzed by; you hadn't made any new friends, yet. You were working yourself up for that soon.
You were stood alone in the yard, waiting for Fritz to appear. When the bell for recess rang, you were carried along with the bustling crowd of kids that desperately wanted to rush out to play. So, you decided to wait for him right here.
Patiently, you watched as other kids ran past you eagerly, not wanting to waste any of their play time. You tried spotting a familiar head of red hair in the crowd; but you couldn't see any.
2 minutes of recess passed. Then 5. Then eventually 10, and Fritz still hadn't appeared.
You sighed anxiously; where was he?
He is definitely here today, he was in all your classes so far. You saw him with your own eyes. So what could he possibly be caught up with?
There was a tap on your shoulder.
"Hey" spoke a female voice.
You turned around, and you were face to face with a girl. She had black hair that was pulled up into two ponytails, piercing green eyes, and bangs that rested just above her eyebrows. She wore a denim overall dress that came to her knees, with a yellow sweater underneath.
She looked familiar; oh yeah, she was also in your first two classes.
"Are you..okay? You looked quite sad stood here. On your own" her voice was soft and filled with worry.
You blinked, the cogs in your mind ticking, that she was concerned about you.
A smile spread across your face at her thoughtfulness, before nodding. "I'm okay! I'm just waiting for my friend"
You threw a glance over your shoulder, back to the doors where Fritz was supposed to be coming out of to meet you. You slowly turned your head back towards the girl, but kept your sad gaze to the floor. "At least..I was. I don't know where he is" you shook your head.
There was a long pause. Your gaze was still to the floor, kicking around a small pebble. Unbeknown to you, the girl before you was thinking. Thinking how to cheer you up. Thinking how to become your friend.
"How about this" she spoke, making you look up to meet her eyes. "It doesn't look like your friend is coming out soon...so I'll stay with you for the rest of recess to keep you company!"
A smile slowly crept onto your face again. She continued. "You can also play with these super awesome toys with me! That I've currently put in a secret place so nobody else can play with them!"
You giggled. "I'd like that a lot. Thank you"
She shrugged. "No problem!"
"I'm Y/N, by the way"
She smiled.
"It's nice to meet you Y/N. I'm Cassidy!"
