“Miss Jessica Walker you have celiac disease, diabetes type one, and are pregnant,” the doctor said. My life stood still. I had no clue what the first one meant. The second was a complete shock and the third blew my mind. I wouldn’t ever forget the date of today again. July 30th, Tuesday. Wee hours of the early morning. I opened my mouth shocked. Really shocked. This couldn’t be. I couldn’t be. But he explained it and it all made sense. The extreme hunger and thirst due to diabetes the morning sickness due to the pregnancy and the cramps due to the fact that I’m not allowed to have gluten. My dad was going to kill me. I knew it. I groaned.
“Would you like to schedule an abortion?” a lady asked walking in. I shook my head. She nodded and looked at the doctor.
“You will get some counseling but I need you to stay in the hospital for the rest of the week to monitor your blood sugar levels and teach you some things that will help you,” Dr. Carlyle said. I nodded and he hooked me up to an IV and led me to a staying room. We talked a bit about options while I got into a gown and he told me a bit about the procedures he was going to do. Then he instructed for me to get some rest. I fell asleep almost instantly and dreamlessly.
I woke up around noon only getting up to relieve myself then fall back asleep because I was so exhausted. My muscles ached as did my stomach still partially. My head was getting better but I soon became too hot and started to sweat which broke me out of my slumber. I pressed a button and the nurse came in and smiled kindly at me. I smiled kindly back. Then Doctor Carlyle came in to instruct me how to take my blood sugar and what was good and what wasn’t. Finally I was able to eat in peace. I ate a lot though hospital food wasn’t the best and fell back asleep
Friday came and I was discharged from the hospital. Now it was time to tell Lexi where I’ve been. Visitor hours ended at seven. She got done cheer at seven. So naturally she’d been out of the know. Josh swore not to tell anyone about anything until I was ready. It was weird having to think of myself as different. But surprisingly Josh didn’t act like a jerk anymore. Well…less than he did before.
He helped me to the car and smiles kissing my head then went around the other side and began to drive home. My phone buzzed. Today Coach Berkeley had let the team out early.
Lexi: Oh Em Gee! Jess where have you been?!
Me: I’ve been sick
Lexi: OHMIGOSH! Feel better!!!
Me: Thanks
Lexi: When can I come see you?
Me: Forty five minutes?
Lexi: That’s soo long! But okay! See ya then!
Me: Adios.
I put my phone down. Lexi was nice and all. But I had slept with her boyfriend. She technically already knew I was pregnant. She had been the one to give me the test. But still. It was odd. It was her boyfriend’s baby as far as I knew.
The drive was short and I had just enough time to get ready with a new outfit, newly showered, and snacking on some gluten free snack that wasn’t the best but better than nothing. Josh explained everything to dad calmly so he accepted it. The only thing he left out was the pregnancy. My father would have freaked. So that was going to be kept a secret.
I was in the bathroom when I heard the doorbell ring.
“I got it!” Josh called. I heard a door open and I walked out of the bathroom once I was finished my business and Lexi hugged me tight.
“Oh my god, thank goodness you’re okay!” she exclaimed. I smiled hugging her back. She was an amazing friend.
“Thanks, Lexi. I’m fine. I’m glad too,” I said. She pulled away and grinned at me.
“So you’re feeling better?” I nodded.
“Much better.”
“Anything wrong?”
“Nope.”
“Coach said you quit cheer.” I sighed and nodded.
“Yeah. I couldn’t do it anymore. Too intense.” She nodded.
“So it’s not a wrong result then?” she asked.
“What result?” my father asked coming in.
“The resignation from cheerleading, father,” I replied quickly with a smile. He nodded and left the house. I sighed in relief and Lexi looked a bit shaken up.
“No, it’s not wrong, Lexi,” I said. I saw her frown. “I’m pregnant.” She stood there trembling. Josh was utterly confused. As was I. What was wrong? “Lexi?” She shook her head.
“Have a nice life with the cheating bastard,” she said. A tear trickled down her face and she left. She just left. I was confused. And shocked. But piece by piece I slowly put together what I assumed had happened. Tony had broken up with Lexi. They’d been together since fourth grade and even before that were best of friends. I blinked not able to process anything. Tony didn’t like me. At all. He was an ass and the most popular guy at school. I snapped into reality and rushed outside to see where Lexi was. But she was already gone. I texted her.
Me: Lexi! Where are you?!
Then I checked my FB. I frowned looking through all my contacts then private messaging some girl that Lexi and I were mutual friends with.
Me: Where’s Lexi’s acct?
Friend: It was just removed. Jess what happened?
I wanted to know that too. I rushed inside up my stairs logging into all my accounts. YouTube. Lexi. Gone. Instagram. Lexi. Gone. Twitter. Lexi. Gone. Tumblr. Lexi. Gone. Kik. Lexi. Gone. Email. Lexi. Gone. What had I missed?!
