A Shattered Reality
The world had gone mad. It felt as though time had stopped, holding its breath, waiting for them to fall apart.
The hospital, once a place of healing, had become a nightmare. The walls, now echoing with chaos, seemed to close in on Yuna, Matthew, Dongshik, and the nurse as they tried to process everything that had happened. They’d been running on adrenaline, instinct, but now, as the reality of the situation settled in, they were forced to confront their fear.
Yuna’s hands trembled as she leaned against the cold, sterile wall of the Laboratory. Her heart hammered in her chest, her thoughts spinning. Seokmin had been the first, the patient zero. She had tried to save him, but it seemed like everything had spiraled out of control. It wasn’t just him anymore. The entire hospital, perhaps even the whole city, was in the midst of an outbreak. People were turning, attacking each other, and no one had any idea how to stop it.
Dongshik stood nearby, his face twisted in anguish. His breath was heavy, each exhale betraying the weight of guilt pressing down on him. He kept muttering, his voice barely a whisper, "I should have known. I should’ve seen it coming. Why didn’t I... why didn’t I protect him?"
Matthew, who had been silent for a while, seemed equally lost. His eyes were distant, staring into the empty corridor as if willing it to make sense. His fists clenched at his sides, his jaw tight with frustration. “We’re too late” he said finally, his voice tight. “Whatever this is, it’s too far gone. We’re not going to stop it.”
Yuna, still leaning against the wall, closed her eyes and took a deep breath. It felt as if her very spirit was being suffocated by the weight of the situation. But then, something shifted inside of her. She had to move past the fear, the overwhelming despair. She couldn’t let this consume her. Not now.
Slowly, she straightened up, her hands wiping away the tears she hadn’t even realized had fallen. Her voice, when she spoke, was low but steady. “Guys, I know... I know it feels like everything’s collapsing around us. But we can’t just stand here. We need to make a plan. If we give in to fear now, it’s over.”
Matthew and Dongshik turned to her, their faces weary and unsure. She could see the uncertainty in their eyes, the question of how they could possibly move forward in a world that was already falling apart.
But Yuna didn’t flinch. She was the first to pull herself together. "We’re not powerless. We still have choices. We still have a chance to figure this out." Her voice was firm, and her resolve became a lifeline for them both.
"First thing we need to do is find out if Seokmin had anything to do with this." She took a breath, trying to steady herself. "Was he the cause of the outbreak? Did he... bite someone? If he’s still alive, he could be the key to understanding how this virus is spreading so fast."
Dongshik’s face paled at the mention of Seokmin, his hands trembling. "But he’s... He was already showing symptoms. If he’s still alive, he could be... like the others now."
Yuna nodded. "I know. But we have to know for sure."
Matthew looked toward the hallway, where the sounds of chaos were still faintly audible. “Alright. Let’s move quickly. But we need to be careful. If anyone is still in there…” He trailed off, his face grim.
Yuna nodded. "We have to stick together. But if it gets too dangerous, we scatter. Get to Seokmin’s ward, figure out what happened. That’s our first priority."
The four of them started walking down the corridor, each step feeling heavier than the last. The hospital was eerily silent, save for the occasional distant scream or crash, but the stillness didn’t bring comfort. It was suffocating. They had no idea what they would find when they reached Seokmin’s ward. But they had no other choice.
As they neared a corner, Yuna’s heart skipped a beat when she heard the sound of shuffling footsteps and muffled groans from down the hall. It wasn’t just one. There were several.
"They’re close" Matthew hissed. He motioned for them to slow down, his voice barely above a whisper. But it was too late. The moment they made a move to hide, the groans turned into frantic growls. Figures stumbled into view—patients who had once been like any other, now transformed into something monstrous. Their faces were pale, twisted in grotesque expressions of hunger and pain, their limbs jerking unnaturally as they dragged themselves closer.
Yuna froze for a moment, her mind racing. They had no time to get to Seokmin’s ward anymore. The hospital had become a deathtrap. “We need to scatter” she whispered urgently. “Now!”
In an instant, they broke in different directions. Yuna bolted for the nearest stairwell, her pulse pounding in her ears as she sprinted up the stairs, her legs burning with the effort. She couldn’t think about anything other than putting distance between herself and the infected. The sound of footsteps pounding behind her made her heart race even faster. She barely made it to the first floor before hearing the horrific shrieks and growls echoing behind her.
There was no time to look back. Yuna burst through a door and slammed it shut behind her. She backed up against the wall, her breath coming in ragged gasps as the adrenaline surged through her veins. For a moment, she simply stood there, shaking. Her heart pounded violently in her chest as she tried to calm her frantic breathing.
The room was small, dimly lit, but it provided her with a moment of silence. A moment to catch her breath. She could hear the sounds of chaos just beyond the door—the growls, the screams, the pounding of feet. It felt like a nightmare that wouldn’t end.
Yuna slid down the wall to the floor, wrapping her arms around her knees. She stared at the closed door, her mind racing with the horrors she had just witnessed. The world outside was no longer the one she had known. She could hear the distant screams of others, knowing they were just as trapped as she was.
A thought crossed her mind—what if this was the end? What if they couldn’t stop it? The fear, the uncertainty—it all threatened to overwhelm her.
But then, as the silence in the room grew heavier, a new resolve began to form inside her. She couldn’t let this break her. She had to keep going. For the hospital. For all those people who were still alive and needed help. Yuna wiped away the tears that had started to fall. She had no time for doubt. No time for fear. There was a plan to execute, and she would see it through.
Because if she didn’t, they were all as good as dead.
