'Where did it all go wrong?'
I attempted to retrace the steps from our mission, still unclear on what dismantled it all. I was at war with my brain, my memories, just fighting for answers that were tucked away in the fog that shrouded my mind. The blackened sky above gave no remorse, no answers and no hope.
'Is this the end?'
The cold begun to sneak in the first layer of my suit, creeping through the exposed tears from whatever-or whoever had did this to me. I almost hadn't noticed how ragged my breaths were until the air seemed to slip away without a warning.
Then they were here, like they had appeared out of thin air. All of their 'faces' stared down at me, however I couldn't find any distinguishable face features - just a gaping hole in the middle of the face surrounded by many ridges. At this point I wasn't sure if my mind was playing tricks on me or if this was real.
I could feel them squirm to position me upright, but at this point all I could think about was everyone I was leaving behind. I could feel my eyes glaze over as I remembered I was supposed to go home a hero, scratch that - I was supposed to go back in general.
I could feel the rise and fall of my chest one last time as I thought my final thought.
'was it worth it?'
