A/N: A long chapter to make up for the long wait.
"Warren has 10K," Murphy announces, coming into my room as I'm sharpening my knives.
"And what am I supposed to do about it? You barely let me stretch my legs around here."
He sighs dramatically. "That's because you keep trying to escape, dear niece. Get ready. Dress sharp. We are going to meet Roberta and her ragtag team holding him."
I sigh, getting up after he leaves. I dress in one of the leather ensembles one of his henchmen brought me a few days earlier. At least it isn't a short dress.
"I'm ready," I tell Murphy, heading down the stairs with him and through the zombie moat. None bother us but regard us curiously. I guess we are both zombie Messiahs now.
"I can't wait to see the look on Warren's face when she sees you," he comments, a spring in his step.
"She'll probably think you did something to me."
"Funny how you did it to yourself. Spent all these years avoiding getting bit and surviving and you were immune the whole time. You must feel so stupid."
"Well, I rather liked myself a normal color."
We walk in on Warren injecting 10K with another vaccine. I want to rush to his aide, but Murphy stops me.
"Thomas, your ride is here," Murphy calls out, startling the group. "Hello, Roberta."
Warren stares at me long and hard, her eyes narrowing but sad at the same time. "What the hell happened to you, Bexley?"
"It's the new her. Don't you like it?"
"What did he do?" she asks, her voice almost cracking.
I shake my head. "Unfortunately, this was all me. Turns out, Murphy isn't the only one that can get bit and turn a color."
"You're immune?" she asks, her eyes widening.
"Yeah and turned ugly in the process."
"I take it you're not under his control either."
I shake my head. "Come on, Killer, let's go."
10K jumps up, walking over to my side obediently.
"Wait," Roberta laughs humorlessly. "He's not under Murphy's control. He's under yours."
"It's complicated," I reply, turning. There's a gunshot and I know it's one of Murphy's men protecting me.
We arrive back to absolute chaos. The zombie moat is tearing a body apart. Murphy's men update him on the situation and we all look up.
"Be Afraid" is written in blood on a large tapestry on the front of the building.
"Get the refugees inside the fence! Innoculate them!" Murphy orders them. "I told you all this day would come. It's here."
