Chapter one

The flight to Manila was boring, two hours sitting was just time wasting I knew I should have bring one of my novel, ergh. And how here I am Theodora Ace standing in line for three hours, this place is slow, god, does the immigration have to gossip? Come on ergh.

My mother could just go to the citizen lane but she wouldn’t dare leave me, my mother being a Filipino with a Bruneian passport yeah she could do that but I can’t, ergh it’s like a ghost town at the citizen lane, can’t they just open it up, lazy bunch of people.

Again the officer from my lane got up for like the fifth time to go to the toilet and take fifteen freaking minutes, the asshole! “Oh come on!” I screamed, the office heard me and took his sit “thank you!” I stomped my feet, I don’t give a damn what people think.

Please! The lines in front of me and behind me should me glad I didn’t it or we would be waiting another extra fifteen freaking damn minutes.

**********

Two hours later and there is only two people in front of me, the man still hasn’t attempt to go to the toilet but it looked like he was about it and I was about to bitch about it, as if I didn’t know what he was about to do like duh, come on, I’ve studied Sociology and Psychology and I am damn good at it, got a scholarship even.

The man cough then finish off the current man and got up “I swear to god, you get out of that little box of yours, you old man and I am going to have to have to talk to your superior about you little fifteen minute break in the toilet for a cigar every ten minute” I hissed, my mother made no attempt to stop me, because she knows what kind of person I am.

And with the sociology and psychology and winning the debate first place in a row for three years, no one stand a chance with me, the old man glared and sat back down. The woman in front of me turned “thank you” she said with a smile, I returned it and gave a few nods.

I finally notice the huge TV screen on top of me attached to the ceiling, it was just news but it was good distractions. The volume was low and with the sound of the crowd I couldn’t hear the voice and tried to read their lips since there wasn’t any subtitle.

I was Kim Kardashian and the others, Khole, Khourtney, Jenni, and the others, looks like they’re sending of Rob and one of the Jenner sister, ergh wonder where are they going this time, Middle East, I finally notice that the news could have lasted for twenty minutes and turn to look back at the box, the little devil, he wasn’t there, I walked over to the toilet where I knew he would be after asking his friends for his name.

Some of his mates already laugh for what was about to happen I knocked on the door and kicking it open “James, get your butt out here, or by god I swear I will come in there and drag you by your tie! Do you even know that it can get you fired!” he ran out passing me and back into his box.

I guess that lawyer course in the university for a year finally paid off. I walked over back to my mother, she was on her phone as usual, which business man or woman wouldn’t be.

**********

The streets were crowded, it was noisy everywhere, dirt on the street, my god, I am starting to know why my uncle Nelson wished me luck. I watch as street beggars knock on the window, startling me, I’ve never seen people like this before, just watching them I think I finally feel thankful for what I have back in Brunei.

The life my sultan try so hard to give, people back home waste things, take them for granted and here I am watch these people, who would love to study but can’t afford it, who is hurry and we waste food or be choosey.

I open the window and was about to hand a hundred peso, the girl about eight held out her hand but my driver shut the window back up from the front controller and move the car, “hye why’d you do that?” I hissed.

“Theodora, let it go, giving them money won’t change, honey” my mother said trying to calm me down.

“what you mean it won’t change, I was about to give that girl a hundred bucks mom, she could have eaten something descent tonight”

“only, one, is that yeah, you give her money, it’ll be called easy money, and let’s say yes, she will have food only to be encourage more tomorrow, and this people you see, these kids, they don’t go back to their parents”

“what do you mean?”

“what your mother mean is that, this people, they are being kidnap and these kidnappers force them to beg for change and all these money they get? Will only be handed back to the kidnapper, they won’t even use a dime, Theodora”

“what?! That is insane! What about the polis? Can’t they do something about it? Like come on mom, I’ve been watching Philippine movies from when I was a child and it was nothing like what I am seeing, this is preposterous”

“oh honey, the life here and what we have back home, is different”

“yeah you can say that again” I sighed and look back out the window, to see an elder man, she was skinny, they all were and dirty, fit to be anorexic, he was carrying a baby, a baby girl, I could tell them we could have grown up to be beautiful, sadly, it hurts knowing she might not get the chance of a better life.

I let the tears fell from my eyes one by one as I watch these people,  it killed me to see one, what more a dozen? Million? Sadness me that nobody will do anything to help, when they actually could, thinking about it, I let out a little giggle.

“you alright, darling?”

“yes mom, I just remembered something, remember that tuition school I went too? my geography teacher was a Pilipino man, he asked us one day, what country as the most natural and manmade disaster? We answered Africa, you know drought and all, poverty”

“yes, darling”

“well who would have know other than the genocide, the isn’t really much disaster there compare to here, the teacher said that we have everything here is the Philippines, robbers, murders, rapist, volcanic explosion, flood, well they did say it’s more fun in the Philippines” the driver let out a laugh, making me laugh a bit too, he worked for my cousin, Rowel, since he is in Italy at the moment, this driver is all ours.

We finally reached Makati city, meaning that we’re nearly home, I can’t wait, I was really tired, wanted to so for a little swim maybe later on to rest “honey we will be going to the mall maybe Sunday? I have a few meetings, would you like to come? I think you should, you are going to inherit all this one day” I nodded.

I had two years of culinary school, three years business, a year at law school and two years studying psychology and sociology. My sister have been studying medicine from day one, and fashion, since I have business back ground, it’s all going to be me, even when I am just the middle child.

It’s only Wednesday today, I guess three more days for shopping, I watch posters of a runaway show, which will be at the Mall Of Asia, the drive drove fast and I think I saw the word Kardashian or maybe something like that.
