I spent my evening staying after, picking up every little shard of glass and dusting every spec of dust that laid on book shelves. I swept four times over and wiped down the random stains until I could see my reflection.
The cleaning wasn't what made this entire experience miserable, but the guards walking around the building, constantly checking my every move. Every ten minutes or so someone was bouniityid to pop their head in the room , not say anything, just watch a moment and leave.
Finishing off the last round of sweeping and revising my work, when the door clicks open once more.
To my surprise it wasn't a random guard, but Jack.
''Ten minutes until curfew. Its probably best you get going, you don't want to be caught out, especially now." He informs me and I nod.
I walk past him as he keeps the door open for me to leave. When I reach the hallway, the lights are I'm and the only people left here and the guards. Jack followed me but lagged behind just enough to give me my own room.
I aimed straight towards the door when a dark, tall figure moved and stood in front the doors.
Malum. I slowed my pace just a little bit and cautiously checked around me for my surroundings. I still could hear Jacks footsteps trailing behind.
Instantly I think Malum caught on to what I've done and they were out to get me.
''Of course they were out to get me, they just don't know it yet.'' I think to myself.
Calm yourself down Morgan, they know nothing.
I realized I had stopped walking and was looking up at Malum.
''Curfew is a few minutes away and even the closest houses are a ten minute walk from here." He said, his words showing no emotion. My face read nervous all over and I was waiting for him to question it. But to my surprise, he didn't.
''I suggest you run." he adds.
I was taken back by his words. I understood curfew but a few minutes late, leaving in the same place he was, sounded asinine.
''She doesn't have to run Malum, Don't be ridiculous.'' Jack says finally catching up to where we stood.
Malum's eyes narrowed as he made his way in front of jack.
'' You are not head of the guard, you do not call the shots. No person is allowed to brake curfew." He remarks coldly , keeping his soulless eyes on him until jack nodded and lowered his eyes. Malum then turns his head to me.
"No exceptions.''
I shake my head and move past him, pushing the door wide open and starting my run.
I kept running. And running. And running.
I passed houses and saw the lights go out, telling the world they were going to sleep.
No one was on the streets, as far as I could see at least.
Finally I reached my street... but to my right was the road that would bring me to Sam, who would most likely still be waiting for me, although I was overly late.
I was running out of time to make my decisions, and I bet Malum would be the one out searching for those who dared to be out past curfew.
Did I dare?
I couldn't exactly leave Sam alone, waiting for me to make my way to him, only to never show up. Not in a time like this. He needed to find his sister. Sam needed me. Or maybe he just needed someone, I reassure myself.
No attachments Morgan. You will go find him, and tell him you cant risk it anymore, just like you should have done in the first place. Surely the boy had some other friends he could trust.
I breathe in and take the right, moving quickly. A rush filled throughout my entire body as my pace stayed at a sprint, not once risking to a jog. A feeling that I had only felt for the day I had met Sam. I had only met him last night and I've done everything I said id never do. Was this feeling excitement or fear? Id never admit to the first choice. Teenagers rebelled at least once in their life. But when was it considered to much? Secretly, I never wanted this to end.
I ran to the field and saw the swing, blowing side to side with only the slightest breeze giving it it's push. I was exactly where I needed to be... In maybe more ways then one.
I move, rounding the tree, that the swing swung on, only to be slammed against the tree, arms pinned against the rough bark. In shock, I said nothing but the dark figure, who I could only barely see by moonlight, sighed and released.
''Morgan. Its about time" he says bitterly. I knew I was late, but it wasn't my choice.
''They have guards, Malum, the head guard, isn't a good person. They are all on to us, none of this is safe. I was held back, I came as fast as I could, its past curfew , they'll be looking for us and if we get caught then its all over" I pant out all at once.
''What I mean to say is.. I'm out. I can't risk it." I continue and he immediately replies. Like the first part of the speech wasn't the worst part, but my last sentence.
''Risk what? Your title? Lucy had your same title and she went missing. Your precious title is a lie, just so the government can use you to get their work done. And the whole "don't talk about it " is bullshit! How many secrets do you think your parents have kept from you! They are on the same side as the rest of them. They are the enemy ." He hissed out moving closer to me, making sure I understood.
''Sam! be quiet someone will hear us!" I whisper harshly. He was right. How could I go back and how could I continue working for them, knowing what I know. I had a final decision. One that I prayed I wouldn't forget.
I grabbed his arm, trying to settle him from his sudden rage.
" I'm sorry, your right.... your right.. what's the plan from now on, because this-" I say motioning our current state. ''- will get us caught faster then we can make any progress."
Before Sam could add some input on the plan we so badly needed, we heard voices coming from the roads.
Voices I now knew all to well.
