Ok, some background on camp. It's offcially called Half Moon Bible Camp For Teens, but everyone just calls it Half Moon. So it's split into five teams for activities and cabins are either all girl, or all boy. By some stroke of luck, Cassandra and I were in the same team. The Purple team. So we spent a lot of time together. Camp is a month long, with two mandatory chapel services a day. But it's fun, don't get me wrong. And that first week, Cassandra gave her life to Christ. When she does something, she goes all in. And I mean ALL IN. She dove deep in, praying and worshiping with all she had. She was the kind of girl everyone wanted to be friends with. Funny, pretty, cool. She didn't even mind that I'm a huge nerd with close to no athletic abilities, or that I speak Elvish when I get frustrated. She just decided to be friends with me. I'm still not sure why. Eventually I realized that I had inadvertently fallen in love with her. It took me exactly 9 days to get up the courage to tell her. Surprisingly, she didn't slap me or look at me weird. She just looked into my eyes, smiled and said "I know." Then she hugged me and went back to her cabin for the night. I was confused. I walked around the campgrounds for a while after that, making my way to the field on the edge of Half Moon's property. When I got there, the huge black rock in the middle of the field had a white piece of paper taped to it. It said, in the cute bubbly script most girls have mastered,
G-
I think I love you too.
-C

I'll admit it, I did my happy dance when I read that. She DID know me. I love the stars so she knew that was where I would go. The next day I asked her to be my girlfriend and she said yes! Shocking, I know, right? And so it began. I had my first girlfriend. No comments from you. Yes, you, the one about to make a smart remark about it. Shut it.
We started doing everything together. Except swimming, you know, since that was boys-girls divided. But eventually camp ended. We still texted constantly but only saw each other a couple times a week.
Sophomore year was-- different. She basically left her group of skater dudes to hang out with me and my friends in the first week. On the plus side, after the regular hazing/pranking by those already in the group, she fit right in. She even placed second in our burping competition (which is very impressive for a newbie). I finished the year upholding my 4.0 average (thanks to a lot of studying with Cass!). Her old friends would give me the stink-eye whenever they saw me, though. I guess they blame me for Cass leaving them. Ah well. They got over it. Eventually.

This leads up to June. Cass and I went to Half Moon again (no surprise), and hung out around town a lot more. July she made a promise to teach me to skate. Which brings us to August, the month that changed everything for me.
