Delilah Moore
"Wake up Delilah, Stephanie!! Its time to get ready before Pastor Charles sees your both still asleep!" Sister Vanessa yells at me through my door, before barging into our room.
"Don't remind me," Stephanie announced to Sister Vanessa, sitting up and groaning in annoyance, looking at me with the same amount of it, rolling her eyes at me.
"Come on your two, wakeup. Its almost time for breakfast, and if your not up and dressed by the time everyone is out there, I wont hesitate to make sure you both don't have supper tonight." Sister Vanessa says sternly, clearly irritated with us being non-punctual.
Stephanie grabs her clothes, and most likely walks to the showers as I am still sitting in bed, breathing for the day to come. I know its either gonna be me getting looks again, or just not being perfect as all these other girls. I'm older then most of them, as I am only two weeks away from being an adult, I'm not ready. Father Charles hasn't brought up me being not allowed to stay here after i turn adult age, but its a floating conversation that is bound to happen, so I'm just counting down the time at my home, the only place I've ever known.
I was born here, in New Jersey, in the middle of no where in the Sisters of Quiet Mercy orphanage, and I have no clue what I might get myself into in the outside world, I hope people are more nice than they are in here, maybe I wont feel so sheltered like I do every day, the girls are allowed outside after lunch, and during the morning, and I'm not. I'm not sure why, but it has forever been this way. Father Charles calls me his angel, but yet I don't understand why i have to leave. He always tells me how beautiful I am, and he cant wait for me to be an adult and go into the world.
I finally get up, putting on my long below the knees dress, and putting my long, and frizzy hair up in a low slick-back bun, and putting on my Mary Janes, finally walking out of my room, through the hallway and sitting in the cafeteria, as I'm not hungry I start fidgeting with my fingers, spinning my thumbs together in between my other fingers, focusing on the loud laughing and talking in the big room.
"Delilah Moore, report to Father Charles's room immediately!" Sister Mary shouts over the intercom, catching everyone's attention, and everyone starting to look at me and whisper about why i might go see the Father. I whisper to myself, "I know what this is about" and I slowly get up, walking to Father Charles room, with my hands clutched behind my back, walking slowly.
"Father?" I say quietly, knocking on the door before me, waiting for a response. "Yes Angel, Do come in!" Father says behind the big door, waiting for me to enter. I then turn the door knob and walk in, sitting on the couch to the side of his office, starting to fidget with my thumbs again. "Is this about my age, Father?" Father Charles takes a deep breath, and strides over to me, kneeling down in front of me and holding my hands, seeming to try to comfort me. Its not working very well.
"This is about your departure, but also your new adventure. You've been here for as long as i can remember, but you are welcome back my sweet girl, when you turn 19, you are welcome back as a sister, and I do wish you will come back."
I take a deep breath, "I would like to explore the world first, Father."
"Understood, now lets get to what this is truly about"
"You must be in contact, every other week with someone from here... Just to you know, check in. Understood Angel?" I take a deep breath, and understand I will never truly be rid of this place, it will always be here. "Understood, Father." I say quickly. "May I be dismissed now, Father?" i let go of his hands, "Yes you may, please make sure your bags are packed. You will be out of here by tomorrow." He stands up, looking down at me "Wait tomorrow? You said after my 18th birthday, Father!" I stand up, he's still looking down at me. I feel so small. "Well I changed my mind, spend the rest of the day packing, and supper is at 6pm sharp. You are dismissed." I sigh quickly, and rush out, running to my bedroom. I still hear some of the girls talking about me to and from Fathers office. I slam my bedroom door and fall onto my bed, crying. This has been my only home for years, and he can just kick me out? What am I supposed to do! I think to myself, my mind going all over, feeling like I'm going crazy.
The only home I've ever known, gone.
