The confrontation with Alex was inevitable. Ethan found him at the tavern, nursing a drink and avoiding eye contact.
“Alex, we need to talk,” Ethan said, his voice tight with controlled anger.
“What is it, Ethan?” Alex replied, his eyes darting around the room.
“Someone’s setting Sarah up, and I think you know who it is.”
Alex’s face paled. “You’re wrong. I’ve been trying to help.”
“Then why have you been avoiding me? Why do you look guilty every time I mention Sarah?”
Alex slammed his drink down, spilling ale across the table. “I’ve got my own problems, Ethan. Not everything is about you and your sister.”
Ethan left the tavern with a sinking feeling. His suspicions grew when he found a ledger in Alex’s home, detailing payments and transactions that tied him to the very people who had accused Sarah.
The ledger was hidden beneath a loose floorboard, a place Ethan only found by accident. He had visited Alex's home under the pretense of seeking solace, hoping to catch a glimpse of his friend’s true feelings. Instead, he stumbled upon the evidence that would shatter their friendship.
Confronting Alex again, Ethan felt a mix of anger and sadness. “I trusted you, Alex. How could you do this?”
Alex’s expression was one of guilt and resignation. “It’s not what you think,
Ethan. They forced me into it. They threatened my family.”
Ethan wanted to believe him, but the damage was done. “You should have told me. We could have fought them together.”
Alex looked away, unable to meet Ethan’s gaze. “It’s too late now. They’ll come after you too.”
Back home, Ethan read a letter from the prison doctor: Sarah’s health was deteriorating. She was barely eating, and her spirit was broken. The knowledge that his sister was suffering pushed Ethan to a breaking point. He vowed to bring the conspirators to justice, no matter the cost.
Determined to save Sarah, Ethan intensified his efforts. He spent sleepless nights gathering more evidence, reaching out to anyone who might help. The town, once a place of comfort and familiarity, now felt like a labyrinth of lies and treachery.
