“Ethan, you’ve always been a straight shooter,” Thomas said when Ethan approached him. “If you say there’s corruption afoot, I believe you. I’m in.”

Next was Clara, a widowed seamstress whose husband had mysteriously disappeared after opposing the mayor’s policies. She brought a keen intellect and a fierce determination to the group.

“We need to be smart about this,” Clara advised. “They have power and resources. We have to be one step ahead.”

One evening, a woman approached Ethan in the market. She was striking, with piercing green eyes and a determined expression.

“I hear you’re looking for justice,” she said. “My name is Isabella. They took everything from me, too.”

Isabella’s knowledge of the town’s underbelly was invaluable. She had once been close to the mayor, unaware of his dark dealings. When she discovered the truth, she tried to expose him, only to lose everything—her home, her family, her reputation.

“Every step we take is risky,” Isabella reminded them during one meeting.
