The in-between

I was back on that first cloud. Alone once more...but I would rather be alone than have the company of freaky skeletons crawling towards me. I got up slowly my knees buckled slightly as I stumbled to my feet. Once again I peered over the edge of the cloud. I was still lying there out in the cold. It was lighter now and the buzz of the street light had been drowned out by some birds casually tweeting. The blood looked worse in the daylight, I could see my grey hoodie properly now...the blood looked so scary and made the whole thing seem more real. The hole in my chest looked larger and more defined.

"Mummy...whys that girl lying down?" Asked a little girl who was dangling on her mother's arm. The mother took one look at me and shielded her daughters view. She took out her mobile phone and dialled a number, "David? Can you take Libby to school please there is something I have to do..." she hung up the phone and dragged her child away. She skipped next to her mother wearing her little school uniform and a pink backpack bouncing on her shoulders. Was she just going to leave me there? Was her daughters education more important than my life...

My life? I'm dead...

She returned quickly without the little girl. She had her phone pressed against her ear and was speaking very fast.

"I don't know I was just taking my daughter to school when I found her..."

She put the phone back in her pocket. She paced around me, unsure of what to do. She kept fumbling with her fingers. She must have been so scared...it's not every day you find a dead teenager in your back lane.

Soon the back lane was flooded with police and paramedics. I don't know why the paramedics were there, I was long gone. Each entrance and exit was cornered of one by a police van and one by an ambulance. The woman was gone and I was left with people touching my body and fingering at my wound. I shuddered at the thought. "Ellie Thomas, that was her name" piped up one of the officers after flicking through my mobile.

Well done Einstein.

I was carted off into the ambulance and it drove away, no sirens no speeding. Why? Because I was dead, they didn't get there in time. No one could have helped me not even if they had tried. The scene was left...as if nothing had happened. The only trace that had been left was a slight stain of blood.

Once more the cloud began to disappear beneath me.
