"(y/n)!! Wake up!! How dare you  abandon your brother like that!!!" My mother screeched at me. I wake up, still groggy from lack of sleep.

I sit up from my bed, and rub my eyes. I watch her, still scolding me. Her words didn't matter to me. I know what I did wrong, and felt bad about it. I left Joseph in his time of need, with THAT witch to take care of him. I glance out the window. Judging by the light, dawn was about to break. She sighs, and I look over to her.

"Look, (y/n). I know this is very hard for you, and I wish we didn't have to go through this. But, at least we still have him. For the time being..." She muttered the last part, but I still hear her.

"What do you mean for the time being!?" I asked/yelled, thoroughly enraged. "You mean that he's going to die!?" I stood up from my bed, still in yesterday's clothes.

Mom stared at me, and opened her mouth.

"You don't realize how hard I've worked for both you and Joseph!! I deserve a little respect, missy!!" That remark pissed me off.

"No, YOU don't know how hard I've worked!! I can't even go to college to get a better job, because I've been working too hard!!" I yell back. I've had to work as a babysitter, as a waitress, and as a cashier in a bakery.

Our fight continued, when I've finally had enough, and stormed outside, while grabbing Matthew's coat. I make sure to slam the door on my way out.

I walk to the toy store, to pick up a new Lego set for Joseph. He loved the things. I also picked up a Marvel comic book, a new release that he's been dying to get.

It's a good thing the hospital is so close that I can walk to it.

I check in, and walk to Joseph's room, where I see him playing with a Lego airplane crashing into a building. He looks up, and beams when he sees me. I notice one thing. His curly brown was gone. In it's place was a bald scalp.

"Can't sleep kiddo?" I ask him. He shakes his head.

"No. Why did you leave last night?" He asks me, sadness in those grey eyes of his. I sigh, and sit down next to his bed.

"Well, I wasn't thinking, and was stupid." I explain to him. I put my hand on his shiny scalp.

"(y/n), you're never stupid. I know why you did it, and it's fine. I overheard the doctors saying I probably wouldn't make it." Joseph says solemnly. I give him a sad smile, and attempt to make him feel better.

"No, you'll make it." I say weakly. Joseph just dismisses it.

"You don't have to sugarcoat, sis, I already know." He says, and looks outside, to where there was fairytale like snow drifting over the harsh, Canadian wilderness. We weren't far from a forest.

Joseph sighs. "I wish I could go outside again." He says wistfully. I smile at him, a plan forming in my head.

"Tell you what, I'll come over on Christmas Eve, and take you out for a night on the town." I suggest. He smiles, a genuine, pure smile.

"Thanks, (y/n). That'll be awesome." He says, satisfied.

"Oh! I almost forgot." I say, pulling out the Lego set and comic book. His eyes light up once he sees them. I spend the rest of my visit building the Lego set, and laughing with him.

"Alright, Miss (l/n), it's time for Joseph's blood transfusion, so it'll be best of you leave." The doctor's voice rings out. I nod, and stand up to leave, but before I do, I give Joseph a light peck on the cheek

I dig my phone out of my pocket, and call Matthew.

"Hey Matt, do you mind meeting me at the café in a few minutes?" I ask him.

"S-sure! Sounds g-great! I'll be there in five, okay?" I smile at his stutter.

"Sounds great."
