You kept glancing to your right at Vic, who would smile back at you and squeeze your hand under the table. He knew you were nervous, and hell, he was too. You could barely swallow your food, feeling his mother’s eyes on you; you felt like they were always judging you. When dinner was over, Vic slipped his arm around your waist and led you over to the couch in his parents’ living room. His parents and the rest of the band followed.

The whole family chatted for awhile and during a moment of silence, Vic looked over at you and raised one eyebrow subtly. You exhaled nervously and nodded your head slightly. He squeezed your hand with a supportive smile.

“Um, thank you for having us, Mrs. Fuentes. Dinner was lovely.”

“Thank you,” she replied stiffly. There was an awkward silence before Vic cleared his throat.

“Mom, Dad…” He looked from them to Jaime, Mike, and Tony. “Guys…” Vic looked at you with a widening smile. “amber and I are having a baby.”

There was a split second of shocked silence before the guys started cheering and laughing, their faces lit up with huge smiles. They rushed over to where you and Vic sat on the couch.

“I’m gonna be an uncle!” Mike laughed, looping an arm around you and Vic’s shoulders from behind.

Tony gave you each a hug and Jaime ruffled your hair and kissed your cheek, while clapping Vic on the shoulder. “Congrats, you two!”

“Thanks guys,” You laughed happily. Vic smiled too, but you noticed he was looking at your mom. Soon, everyone else noticed too, and the room grew tense and silent.

“Mom?” Vic said, his voice guarded.

“I knew this would happen,” she said quietly.

“… That we would have a baby?” Vic asked.

“That you would get her pregnant. Victor, don’t you understand? amber is not the girl for you, can you honestly see spending the rest of your life with her? And now you have to marry her.”

“Mom, I love amber. I don’t understand why that’s so hard for you to accept! And you know we’re engaged, Mama, so yes, I do want to spend the rest of my life with her.”

“Think about what’s best for the child, Victor, really.”

Vic grabbed your hand and the two of you stood up, tears welling in your eyes. He glared at your mother and kissed your cheek. “amber, we should leave. Wait in the car, ok?”

Jaime looped an arm around your waist and walked you out the door. “Wait,” you said to him on the porch; you wanted to hear what Vic was saying.

“You know, I had really hoped you would support us in this, Mom. I don’t know what your problem is with amber, but I love her, I am marrying her, and we are having a child. I had hoped you would be there, in your grandchild’s life, but I guess not.”

Vic stormed out the door and almost ran into you, surprised. “amber. I asked you to wait in the car.” You wrapped your arms around him and he hugged you back, sighing. “Come on, baby,” he whispered, leading you to the car.

Once you were inside, you finally broke down crying. Vic pulled you against his shoulder and you cried into his chest.

“Vic, why does she hate me? What have I done wrong?”

“Nothing, baby, nothing. You’re perfect and what matters is that I love you. Okay?”

“It’s just…” you sniffled. “I hoped she would be h-happy, you know?”

“I did too, honey. But listen to me.” He took your face between his hands and wiped your tears with his thumbs, looking into your eyes. “I love you, and I love our baby. We’re going to be a family, whether my mother is part of it or not. We are going to have this baby, and I will love both of you forever, no matter what. Okay?”

You managed a small smile. “Okay.”

He kissed your forehead and turned on the car. “Good girl.”

## 8 months later ##

“Vic, call her.”

“amber, I don’t think—”

“Vic!” You paused, taking a few deep breaths as another wave of contractions hit you and you squeezed his hand tightly. You sighed when the pain passed. “I don’t care what she said before, she’s your mom, Vic. She doesn’t need to come, but she deserves to know.”

Vic looked down at you lovingly, wiped the thin layer of sweat from your forehead, and whispered “Okay.”

The doctor walked in as he dialed his mother’s number to tell her you were in labor. You watched the doctor while she talked to the nurse.

“Alright, are you two ready to have a baby?” The doctor smiled at you and Vic. He smiled at you and squeezed your hand tightly. You gulped and looked up at him nervously.

“I’m scared, Vic,” you admitted, squeezing his hand back. The contractions came again and the doctor motioned to the nurse, signaling it was time.

He knelt by the bedside, as close as he could get to you, and held a cold washcloth to your forehead. He looked guilty, he hated seeing you in pain. “I know, I know, amber. You can do this baby, I’m right here.”

The doctor raised your knees and spread them apart. The doctor and nurse coached you through it, while you couldn’t help but scream and cry, gripping Vic’s hands so tight you left claw marks on his palm.

Vic had tears in his eyes, and you tried to be strong for him, knowing that it probably was just as painful for him to see you this way. Well, maybe a little less painful. The doctor and nurses urged you to push, but you were only looking at Vic.

“Vic, it hurts, it really hurts,” you gasped.

“I know baby, I’m sorry. You need to push though, beautiful.”

You shook your head, gripping his hand with one hand and the bed frame with the other. “Vic I c-can’t, it hurts so bad.” You screamed again, crying, and suddenly you felt a hand cover yours and pry it free from the bed frame. You looked over at Mrs. Fuentes, utterly shocked.

“Squeeze my hand as hard as it hurts, amber. You’re doing a great job, honey, but you have to keep pushing. You can do this, I know you can—you are doing this! Okay? We’re going to push on three, and squeeze our hands as hard as you can. One, two, three!”

You squeezed your eyes shut and leaned forward in bed as you pushed as hard as you could, gripping both hands tight. Vic and his mother soothed you, encouraged you, and rubbed your back, and a few pushes later, you heard a little voice crying and you collapsed back against the pillows.

Vic swooped in immediately, pulling the hair out of your face and wiping it with a cold washcloth. He stroked your face and looked down at you in amazement, his eyes watering. “Baby, you did it. I am so proud of you.” He kissed your forehead. “You’re a mom,” he whispered.

The doctor walked over with a little blue bundle and smiled, handing your baby to you. You and Vic held her together, cradling him gently as if you might break him.

“allyson Fuentes,” Vic whispered, smiling down at your little miracle. After a few happy moments, you looked over at Mrs. Fuentes and smiled softly up at her.

“Do you want to hold him?”

She hesitated for a second and then reached her arms out for her. She cradled her against her chest and rocked her softly. Vic rubbed your shoulders and you squeezed his hand. Mrs. Fuentes couldn’t help but smile. She looked up at you two with tears.

“shee has your eyes, amber.” She smiled again. “she’s beautiful. our daughter is beautiful.”

Vic kissed your temple and you smiled up at him sleepily.

“We have a family, Vic.”
