Who would have thought that going inside abandoned buildings would be part of their daily routine??
Rick didn't and he hated it, he despised going in them because you just did not know what to expect and the fact that he was risking his people's lives day in and day out.
They all knew that every second counted, any sound you made could attract a hoard of walkers, a simple distraction or if someone was not focused enough it could lead to all of their deaths.
It had happened to him once and he would never forget it, he remembered the stench and then the fear that came when a walker came barrelling into him from the side, sending them both crashing to the floor, from then on he made sure he was fully focused.
But sometimes even if he was fully focused something bad could still happen, just like today when he and Daryl were checking out an old convenience store.
A walker had appeared out of nowhere and headed straight for his jugular, he managed to hold it off with one arm against its throat, and the other trying to grab the gun out of its holster.
When he managed to grab it the walker's strength became unmanageable and he dropped the gun, "shit", was this the end he thought.
As he looked up he saw the walker closing the gap, but suddenly an arrow was embedded in its skull causing it to still and then collapse to the floor.
"You didn't get bit did ya?" Came a deep voice just ahead of him.
Taking a few breaths and wiping the sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand he looked to the man and smiled "No I'm good, just got taken by surprise is all".
"What the heck did ya think you were doing getting all surprised like that? It could have killed you man!!".
"Calm down Daryl, you can see that I am ok, stop worrying" he replied, wondering why the hunter was worried all of a sudden, yeah they were friends but they had to get used to the fact that people died so much faster than they did in the old world.
"Ya just don't understand do ya" he grumbled as he turned his back to him.
"Understand what Daryl" he asked slightly confused, "hey, wait up" he said as he grabbed a hold of the other mans arm to stop him from walking away before he got his answer.
"It doesn't matter ok, just leave it" he grumbled.
"No! I am not going to leave it, we could die any day now and I hate the fact that we could have secrets between us, just please tell me, you know I am a nosey bastard, and I won't let it go" he pleaded.
He knew he should not push the hunter, he was known to have a short temper but something inside him wanted to know what the other man meant, and why he was stand-offish when normally they were quite close.
All of a sudden Daryl had turned around and closed the gap between them, then he felt his dry lips brush against his own before withdrawing and walking away.
"Lets get back before the others send a group out to look for us" he said over his shoulder, avoiding eye contact.
Rick was frozen to the spot, trying to absorb what had just happened, he could not quite believe that Daryl kissed him, he never thought the man was that way inclined.
But if he didn't mind the kiss either was he that way too?? Not that there was any issue of that, especially in the apocalypse but it was something he needed to figure out on his own.
As soon as Daryl's back was out of sight he seemed to snap out of his thoughts and followed to him to the car outside, he knew that they had to speak about it but he would leave it till they got back to the prison in one piece.
