Again, I have no words for Zevon.
"You do." He states, already knowing without my verbal confirmation.
The realization on his face only grows.
"And the person Khai has a crush on is you..."
I glance up at him and just watch him for a few seconds before nodding.
"Well, I was going to say we didn't have to fight and we'd just have to let Khai decide... but I guess it's pretty obvious who he'd choose now."
"Look, I don't understand why he likes me-"
"Tyrone, it's okay. We still don't have to fight. You two have known each other longer."
"So what, you're just going to..."
"I understand the situation. I'll just have to find someone else to like."
I'm about to reply when Zevon suddenly talks first.
"We're here." He jumps up the steps and rings the doorbell.
I don't trust it. I know you can't just turn off your feelings like that. But at the same time, I'm glad he's not going to try to get in between us.
I hope not, anyways.
"Hey Rassler." I greet him when I notice him sitting on the porch, smoking a cigarette and reading something.
"Hi Tyrone." He returns the greeting when he looks up.
His gaze shifts to Zevon, and he squints his momentarily, which somewhat confuses me. It's like he has some sort of distrust or grudge against Zevon. I'm not sure what it is or if they know each other or something.
"What are you reading?" I ask Rassler.
"Oh, nothing really." He says, his voice sounding cryptic. It doesn't help that he closes the book then, which doesn't even look like it's written in English.
It's a really thick book, too. It looks like it's some sort of ancient spell book from a made-up fantasy world. It looks rather mysterious and it certainly piques my curiosity. But Hazel opens the door then and the desire to see Khai takes over wanting to know what the book is about.
"How's Khai?" Zevon and I ask at the same time.
Hazel gives Zevon the same judgmental stare that Rassler did before telling us he's eating a hamburger in the living room.
I glance inside and spot him, wrapped up in blankets while watching something on TV.
I kick my shoes off, not bothering to straighten them today. Instead, I walk past Hazel and approach Khai.
Zevon, on the other hand, seems to be trying to prove to Hazel that he's not a bad person.
While it's suspicious and mildly concerns me, Khai is my priority right now.
"Hey, how are you?" I ask as I sit down beside him.
"Ty, you're back!" He says happily, ignoring my question.
"Hey, the school can't hold me hostage all day." I joke. "But for real, are you feeling better?"
Khai nods because his mouth is too full to speak.
"Is the headache gone?" I ask before realizing I should probably let him finish eating first.
He nods again, and when he finishes his mouthful, he looks at me worriedly.
"Are you hungry? Did you eat lunch? Cause I wasn't there with you and usually I get you lunch and now-"
"Khai... relax. Hazel gave me some cash this morning so I could buy lunch."
