Jake was woken up at stupid in the night because of the stupid cows mooing in the stupid barn for some stupid reason.
As you can probably tell, he wasn't too happy about it.
He swung out of bed, grabbed an iron chestplate off the armor stand, strapped it over his shirt and walked out of his room.
His iron sword was downstairs, along with his boots. He grabbed both and gazed outside as he pulled the leather shoes on, staring at the snowy trees.
Jake lived with his parents and baby sister in a forest clearing. Apparently both his mother and father had, after they had gotten married, cleared out this little spot to build a farm, got some cows, chickens and pigs, and settled down to raise a family.
He loved living here, watching the seasons change, following his father down the mine to see the sheer sides of an underground ravine, taking care of the livestock. Jake had made his mind up as to what he would be when he grew up: an explorer, bravely entering the uncharted, endless biomes of the Overworld beyond. Maybe even one day he would see the Aither, realm of the sky, or even the hot and hellish Nether, where Ghasts, demons and zombie pigmen made their home.
However, sometimes he hated living on the farm.
Like now, when cows woke him up at Notch knows when for some stupid bovine reason.
Jake finished pulling on his boots and strapped his sword to his side, just in case. The farm was well-lit, and surrounded by a high cobblestone wall, but there had been reports of a strange increase in monster spawning. Huge hordes of zombies and skeletons attacked small plains villages, and it wasn't uncommon to see a hostile spider or rogue zombie in city alleyways. Jake wasn't about to die just because he hadn't brought a sword with him for five minutes.
He stepped outside onto the gravel path leading to the cows' barn. The henhouse was right across from the front door, and a few chickens could be heard inside, clucking agitatedly. So it wasn't just the cows, then.
The pigs were silent, but as he passed the doghouse, the family dogs, Chewy and Mimi, came rushing ot, barking their heads off. Two porkchops fixed that, but it was now obvious that something bad had happened.
Jake drew his sword as he approached the barn, startled to see that the door was open a crack. He continued, apprehension building in his throat...
Inside the barn, only a few redstone torches illuminated the space. If it was too bright, the cows would never sleep, convinced that it was daytime. Stupid animals.
The cows were pushing at the fence that cut them off from the main barn, mooing in agitation. Jake grabbed a few wheat from a nearby chest and tried to calm them, but nothing worked. He stared at the livestock, frustrated at his lack of success...
Something hissed in the corner.
Jake lifted his sword and turned towards the source. One section of barn, locked off from the cows, was full of hay bales, and in nigh-complete darkness.
There was a tall, dark shape kneeling on the hay. Jake looked down and saw a trail of purple liquid, fizzing and giving off tiny particles of purple smoke.
He gasped and edged his way towards the figure.
It turned slowly, backing away, with one hand over the glowing gash on its stomach, and Jake was suddenly facing a horrible creature- something players and villagers alike feared all over the Overworld.
An Enderman.
