"You..." I say truthfully, not wanting to make a long awkward pause. He'd know I was making something up otherwise, because he's fairly good a reading me.
Though maybe not so much when it comes to crushes. Sometimes I wonder how he hasn't pieced it together yet or how he can be so oblivious to it.
But honestly, it's for the better.
"Me?" He questions, seeming surprised.
"Yeah... that shouldn't be so shocking, seeing I'm talking to you..." I say, quickly saving myself.
"Right." Khai laughs nervously, but he shrugs it right off when he seemingly remembers something else that interests him. He grins at me.
"So... would you like some tea?"
"Sure, it's supposed to help you sleep, right?"
"No no no, like verbal tea. Although... you could have drinkable tea, too... ooh, you could drink it while I talk, then you'll be consuming two teas at once."
"Uhh..."
"C'mon, let's go back down, I'll make you a tea. Actually I'll tell you my tea while I make you your tea, how about that?"
Before I can say anything, Khai is already struggling at an attempt to drag me with him.
He only succeeds when I decide to follow him.
When we get downstairs, Khai disappears in the pantry.
"Mom, where's the drinkable tea?" He calls from within.
I shake my head and stand up, then head over to where he is.
"Khai... your mom left, remember?"
I remind him.
"Oh... right. Dad-"
"You dad went with her." I say flatly.
"Oh... right." Khai repeats.
"How do you not know where the tea is?" I ask. "Rassler told me your mom has this whole system set up that makes it efficient for you."
"Well... that is true but we also have a lot of things so- wait, never mind, I know where it is now. Thanks Ty."
Khai brushes past me, exiting the pantry while I just watch him, somewhat mystified.
"I have no idea what I did, but you're welcome." I say while following him.
I seat myself at one of the bar stools so I'm on the other side of the counter where he's working.
Khai decides not to explain, too busy studying the teas, which he's found near the coffee maker.
"What tea do you like, Ty?"
"What do you all have?" I ask.
"Currently we have green tea, peppermint, maple, chamomile lavender, and then a bunch of fruity ones. I like those."
"Okay... I think I'll go with the chamomile lavender."
Khai nods, then reads the tea box for as long as his attention span holds out.
"Good choice. It says it helps you sleep and also reduces anxiety."
"Nice."
"Yeah... do you want anything in your tea?"
"Can I have sugar in it?"
Khai frowns.
"What?" I ask, smiling for some reason.
"Isn't that gonna defeat the purpose? Sugar usually gets you all hyped up and then your heart will still be racing... but it's okay, I'll still put some in."
