In dhritarashtra chamber
As Gandhari entered the chamber, Dhritarashtra was engrossed in reading scriptures. Her face was calm, but her mind was busy plotting something.
He closed the manuscript, paid his respects, and rose from his seat.
Dhritarashtra: Gandhari, you've come. How is Duryu?
Gandhari: He is fine, Arya...(She paused as Dhritarashtra walked toward the balcony.)Arya, there is something I wish to speak to you about.
Dhritarashtra: Go on.(She sat beside him. He smiled softly at her.)
Gandhari: Arya... I want a daughter.
Dhritarashtra: Huh? Love, what are you saying?(Nervous now, as if his thoughts were exposed.)We already have three daughters. Tara... and now Adwi. You adore her so much. What need is there for another? I'm not saying we can't, but..
Gandhari: Arya! That's not what I meant.
(She was embarrassed by his misunderstanding.) I was talking about gaining another daughter-through our sons' marriages.
Dhritarashtra: Oh...(He laughed nervously.)I've already spoken to Yudi about attending the swayamvar in Ayodhya. But Duryu... and who knows where he and Karn will find brides for themselves.
Gandhari: Why must we search, Arya, when our daughters-in-law are already chosen?
Dhritarashtra: What are you saying? You've already decided their matches?
Gandhari: Not me Arya, They found love themselves. I only wish for you to accept it.
Dhritarashtra: Truly? Then why didn't they tell me? Who are these girls?
Gandhari: The daughters of King Drupad, Arya. Duryu loves Bharata Drupad's eldest daughter-Janvi.
Dhritarashtra was stunned, surprised-and pleased.
Dhritarashtra: But Janvi...
Gandhari: Are you unhappy with this, Arya?
Dhritarashtra: What? No! I'm delighted. If our friendship deepens into something so beautiful, I couldn't ask for more.
My only concern is-does Janvi feel the same for our Duryu?
Gandhari fell silent. She realized her mistake-speaking before knowing Janvi's answer fully.
Gandhari: She... hasn't given her reply yet. But I believe she loves him too.
Dhritarashtra: Then we must wait. She has every right to choose her life partner. We cannot proceed without her consent.
Gandhari nodded. He was right. Still, she knew-her plan was already in motion.
Dhritarashtra: And will you not speak of Karn and Sri?
He glanced at her sideways. Gandhari's eyes widened.
Dhritarashtra: Or Arjun and Sachi?
(Smiling slightly) My sons have excellent taste.
Gandhari was stunned.
Gandhari: You knew?
Dhritarashtra: Of course. A king may be occupied with administration, but he never forgets his children.
Gandhari: Even I didn't know about Arjun and Sachi. How did you-
Dhritarashtra: As I said, I know what happens in my children's lives.(Walking back into the chamber)And I must say-the king of Dwarka and his brother are not easy to please..You'd better tell their beloved son, Dusha, to confess quickly.
Gandhari stood speechless.
Gandhari: What? Even Dusha?(She followed him, completely baffled.)
Wait-how many secrets are there? Tell me, Arya!
