When SM Entertainment's concept boy group "Super Junior" debuted in 2005,
Rumors about a girl group counterpart spread like wildfire.
Online speculations circulated, with netizens linking names and faces of prominent traineesto a group called "Super Girls".
The original lineup boasted of 11 female trainees but was eventually cut down to six:
-Jessica Jung
-Kim Hyoyeon
-Kwon Yuri
-Choi Sooyoung
- Im Yoona (Yoon Ah)
-Seo Joo Hyun (Seohyun Maknae)
After several more rounds of shuffling,
-Kim Taeyon
-Stephanie Hwang (Tiffany)
-Lee Soon Kyu (Sunny)
Were added to complete the group which we collectively now known as
"So Nyeo Shi Dae" (SNSD)
A name taken from Lee Seung Chul's 1989 hit of the same name which translatesto
"The Era of Maidens"
To further cement name recall the group was given to English Name "Girl's Generation".
