Alessia sat on the edge of her bed, adjusting the hem of her cardigan as she stared at the reflection in the mirror. Her heart was pounding, anxiety coursing through her veins, but she had to keep it together. The AA meeting wasn't going to attend itself, and she needed to face the challenge head-on. She took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves, but the sound of small footsteps coming down the hallway broke her focus.
"Aunt Alessia, are you going to the meeting now? Can I come with you?" Ava's high-pitched voice rang through the door before the little girl barged into the room, her dark hair bouncing with each step. Ava, no older than eight, had a knack for making everything more chaotic than it needed to be.
"Not right now, Ava," Alessia said, trying to keep her tone gentle but firm. She stood up and grabbed her purse, adjusting her posture as she walked toward the door. "I need to focus, okay? I'll be back soon."
"But I wanna go with you! Can I at least help you get ready?" Ava asked, pouting with her hands on her hips.
Alessia forced a smile, but her patience was starting to wear thin. "I appreciate it, but I really need some space right now. I promise I'll see you later."
Ava's face twisted with a mixture of disappointment and determination as she reached for the perfume bottle on the dresser. "But you're always so busy! Why can't I just help? What if you forget something?"
Before Alessia could respond, the sound of footsteps echoed from the hallway, and the door to her room swung open. Luciana, Alessia's older sister, stepped into the doorway, her expression a mixture of concern and mild frustration. She was dressed for work, her brown hair neatly pulled back, but the tiredness in her eyes was evident.
