*Matthew's POV*
I was walking aimlessly around the woods surrounding the pack house. I felt like something was calling me to the woods. I kept walking, my eight year old legs propelling me deeper into the darkness. I loved seeing the trees towering above me with the moonlight coming through the leaves.
I looked around taking in the silence. It was nice to get away from the pack every once in a while. I love my pack and spending time with them, but it can be a little exhausting never having time to be alone. The silence was soothing...until a muffled scream shattered the peace.
I ran as fast as I could to the source of the noise. I stopped short to observe the scene before me.
There was a rouge towering over a little girl. It wasn't unusual for rouges to kidnap kids near a pack. They use them as barging tools or they just take them out of boredom. You never really know. Rouges are unpredictable, which makes them dangerous.
The girl tripped and landed on her butt. I finally saw her.
She had wild brown hair and icy blue eyes that I thanked my heightened eyesight to let me see. His hand was over her mouth. She had tears streaming down her small face. I felt a growl rip through me. We made eye contact. My heart swelled. I motioned for her to be quiet.
The rouge looked around but he couldn't see me. He shrugged it off and picked her up. She was squirming and more tears ran down her innocent face.
I knew I should get my dad or a guard, but something was keeping me there staring at her. My wolf was furious. Next thing I knew I felt white hot pain and suddenly I was a wolf. I don't know how this is possible! I'm only eight! I shouldn't change until I was sixteen. I have eight more years.
I looked up to see her staring wide eyed. Not scared. Just amazed. The rouge was being rough with her. I heard her strangled cry and went ballistic. I attacked the rouge with all my new found strength. How dare he touch her!
I heard pounding footsteps.
My dad (the Alpha) emerged from the trees. His wolf was a menacing misty grey. He looked shocked to see my small grey and black wolf.
He bowed his head in submission. I was confused until I realized I was standing protectively above the girl. My snarl stopped, but I didn't move. I laid down on top of her to protect her from the fight and to block her from seeing the rouge being torn up.
She snuggled up to my warmth, oblivious to the now dead rouge on the ground. Dad shifted back and grabbed shorts.
My wolf was so confused. I wasn't supposed to shift yet. So what triggered it?
I looked down at the girl and I knew it was because of her. My protective instincts kicked in. I had to save her despite not even knowing her name. I sniffed the air and I could smell her sweet vanilla and strawberry scent. I calmed down a little bit.
She probably shouldn't have seen any of this but I can't find it in me to care. Human or not, I had to save her and I am sure the rogue scared her enough that this can't be the worst thing she has dealt with tonight. The though made a low rumble start in my chest.
I looked at my dad to see his reaction. He didn't seem to care either. He just looked confused and concerned. He inched closer. Without warning a growl rumbled in my chest. He stepped back and waited for me to calm down.
My dad talked me through shifting back. I could feel the girl rubbing my back until I was my human self. My dad threw me some shorts. The girl didn't leave my side she just politely looked away when necessary.
We took her back to the pack house and I didn't leave her side. Even through the medical exam, given it was just checking her for bruising and broken bones. She didn't seem to mind.
"What's your name?" I asked the shy girl. "C-C-Clara Collins" she answered quietly. What a beautiful name. "I'm Matthew Lewis"
She smiled. I heard the door to the medical room open. I growled and stood protectively in front of Clara. A small hand reached out and lightly touched my shoulder.
I saw my dad walk in. I relaxed and turned to face Clara. I leaned in and smelled her intoxicating scent. It calmed my wolf and I turned to my dad.
"Yes?" I asked worried that something was wrong. "Well good news is you're okay. But we need to find your parents. Now Clara where are your mom and dad?" He asked sweetly.
"Um I don't know. The man took me from my room a while ago then he um took me to the woods. Um sorry." She stammered.
"Okay it's alright sweetie. Do you know mommy and daddy's names?" He tried.
"Yes. Mommy's name is Sophie and daddy's name is Simon." Clara smiled.
My dad nodded and mindlinked the trackers. Hopefully we would find them soon for Clara's sake, but I couldn't help but be nervous that I would never see her again.
We found them in no time. Once they were brought to the pack house my dad was about to just hand Clara over. I fought him and we ended up telling them the secret. We told them everything. Mates and all.
They took it amazingly well. Sophie explained that she read a lot of books about weres.
"I had some strange encounters with some wolves since I am a wildlife biologist and started thinking that maybe the books weren't too far off" Sophie chuckled as she explained. She talked about how excited she was that this was all real. We all had a good laugh.
My mom (the Luna) graced us with her presence and they all ended up being great friends. I never would have thought that an Alpha couple and a human couple would have so much in common. They talked for hours. Me and Chloe talked and talked until we fell asleep next to each other.
Who would've know that they would move onto our land and live in a house outside the pack house. They became close family friends and Chloe and I grew up together.
I fell in love with her.
I pray every night that she will be my mate. The only problem is you don't find out until you hit the age of eighteen.
We are best friends. She was with me every time I had to shift. She always calmed me down. And nine years later we are still inseparable.
My eighteenth birthday draws closer. And that is where our story begins...
