The bustling noise of the airport surrounded Arizona like a constant hum - the rolling of luggage wheels, the beeping of announcements, the chatter of travelers. But despite the chaos, all she could focus on was her family.
Her mom, Daniela, stood to her left, holding tightly onto Diego's small hand. Her little brother, barely eleven, was trying his best to look tough, though his teary eyes betrayed him. Next to them was her grandmother, Alba, with a stern but trembling expression. Arizona could see the worry etched into her face - the kind of worry that no reassuring words could seem to erase.
Arizona's heart twisted. This wasn't easy. None of it was.
"You don't have to do this," Alba's voice broke the tense silence. "I know it's an opportunity, mija, but what if you stayed? You're engaged now. Maybe it's time to think about building a home here."
Arizona stiffened. She'd expected this. The moment she told her family she was going to study abroad in Okinawa, Alba had been the most resistant. But hearing those words out loud - about her engagement - made her stomach twist.
"I have to go, Abuela," Arizona said softly, her voice cracking just enough to make Alba flinch. "This isn't about leaving anyone behind. It's about finding who I am, finding what I want for my future."
