I leaned back in the blue cushioned seat and looked out the window. The airplane I was on was currently flying over the Atlantic Ocean on it's trip to Ireland. Ireland, I thought, closing my eyes and imagining what it would be like there once the plane landed. It would be... Spectacular. This would be the first time I'd ever been so far away from my home in America, but it was worth it. It was worth being able to get away from home and start a new life here. To step out of my comfort zone and take some risks. With my boyfriend by my side, nothing could stop me.
I mean, it's not like my parents are so horrible that I'm dying to get away from them... In fact, they're amazing parents. But they've always kept me on an extremely short leash and while I was growing up, they were always really strict. I never even had a computer growing up, or any video games. They only let me watch one hour of television after I finished my chores, my homework, and my sixty minutes of reading. They never let me drink fizzy soda or eat rich chocolate, or any candy for that matter.
But I didn't mind much. I grew up the smartest kid in my grade and one of the most athletic. I was skinny and strong-built. I knew how to take care of myself. I hugged the book I was holding into my chest and smiled. As soon as I was old enough to leave, I'd moved into my own apartment, I'd bought a computer and discovered Facebook and Google. Facebook was where I'd met my boyfriend, James. Another thing I'd wanted to check out was YouTube, but I'd never really had any spare time for that. I figured once I got settled in here and such I'd see what YouTube was all about.

I woke up with a start as the plane I was on finally landed. I sat upright and couldn't stop the grin that plastered itself on my face. Ireland! I'd finally made it to Ireland! I hopped off my seat and waited as all the other passengers made their way off the plane. I climbed off the air vessel and took in a deep breath. The air was clean and fresh here. I opened my eyes and took in all the sights surrounding me... They were just as beautiful as I'd imagined they'd be. Big, bright green forests of trees, lush, emerald green rolling hills and mountain peaks in the distance. I could see the Atlantic Ocean as well, vast, blue, and gorgeous. I must be dreaming, I thought with a smile.... But I knew I wasn't. This was too perfect, too amazing to be something my mind dreamt up. It was time to call my boyfriend and tell him I'd arrived.
I picked up my luggage and dragged the rolling backpack with me as I walked away from where the plane had landed. I dialed my boyfriend's number and took a seat on one of the white painted benches nearby as a sharp wind blew. The phone rang three times before he picked up. Hearing his voice sent shivers down my spine and along my arms. The last time we'd actually talked was two months ago on Skype.
"James? Hi it's Lacey." I said, tapping my fingers on my knee in anticipation.
"Lacey... Oh... Hey." I frowned at the sound of disinterest in his voice. I shook it off, reassuring myself that he was probably just having a bad day. Once he heard that I was in Ireland, just to see him so we could start a new life together, I'm sure he'd perk up.
"I have big news." I said.
"Okay." He replied, still not sounding very interested. I groaned and clenched my fist.
"What's your problem today?" I demanded. He shouldn't be acting like such a prick, he should be at least somewhat happy.
"Nothing. Just tell me the big news." He said calmly and I sighed.
"Baby I'm in Ireland. I'm here to see you, like I said I would be." I replied just as calmly. The line was silent and I checked the screen to make sure I didn't accidentally hang up on him. I hadn't.
"Hello? Isn't this great?" I asked hopefully.
"You're kidding, right?" James said, and my eyes widened. I didn't like his tone of voice... My stomach clenched and I had a bad feeling that something terrible was about to happen. I had a strong urge to hang up right away, but I quickly decided against that. No, I told myself. Nothing is going to happen, I'm just being paranoid.
"No... No I am not kidding." I said indignantly. "Why would you think I was kidding about something like this? Aren't you happy James?" I asked and he sighed.
"There's no easy way to tell you this Lacey so I'll just give it to you straight. I don't plan on meeting you because... Well, I'm already married." He said and I gasped.
"You're what?" I almost screamed. Married? How could he already be married? How could he be so heartless, so cruel, to do that to me and to his wife?? I started rocking back and forth as my heart sped up in my chest.
"I'm married, Lacey. And we're over. Please don't ever call me or contact me in any way again. Goodbye." He said coldly.
"But-" He hung up before I could make out more then that one word. The phone fell from my hand and crashed into the sidewalk below. My mouth was frozen open in silent horror and my hand was still near my ear. I couldn't move... I was in shock.
James... My first online boyfriend... Was already married. All those times he said he loved me, and only me, had been a lie. He had been a lie. My stomach churned and my heart clenched tighter. I zoned out from everything as tears rolled down my cheeks, creating rivers. I started shaking and I held in a scream.
Minutes later, I finally snapped out of it, and suddenly felt extremely tiny. I was in an unknown country, and I hadn't even prepared to come here in any way whatsoever... I just figured that James would explain everything. I didn't know how to speak any Irish and I didn't know any of the Irish customs. I looked around me and clenched my fists together. I had no Euros and I had no where to go... There was no way I'd be able to afford a flight home.
I buried my face in my hands and silently sobbed. I should have never come here... I should never have believed James actually loved me... All of it was just a lie, a lie... I couldn't shake that thought from my mind. And now here I was, alone and lost.
I sniffled and lifted my head, eyeing the sidewalk. I needed to think of something before it got dark outside. I bent down and picked up my phone, checking the clock. The time was different here so it was two in the afternoon. That wasn't too bad I guess... It gave me plenty of time to try and work out a place to stay. I stood up and started dragging the rolling bag with me. That and a backpack slung across my shoulder was all I had brought.
I went to the airport and decided to try talking to one of the receptionists. Maybe they could help me find a flight, or a place to stay even that accepted American dollars... God I sure hoped they did. I stepped into line and waited patiently for my turn.
