The night air carried a crisp, lingering chill as the great imperial palace of Eckrett remained bathed in the flickering golden glow of its torches. Inside the emperor's private chambers, the scent of chamomile still hung in the air, blending with the remnants of candle wax and polished wood. Queen Victoria Rozenreff Eckrett, known as Tori to those closest to her, sat with legs crossed in a regal yet relaxed manner, her ruby-red eyes gleaming with hidden depths. Across from her, Emperor Corean Shuia Eckrett, the man feared as a usurper and kin slayer, studied his wife with an intensity that was equal parts admiration and hunger.
"So, the delegation of Monakre is finally here." Corean leaned forward, resting his elbows on the armrest, fingers laced together in contemplation.
"Yes." Tori placed her cup down on the lacquered ebony table between them. "And unlike the Altera delegation, their arrival is shrouded in much more mystery. They did not send word ahead of time, nor did they follow the usual diplomatic procedures. That alone is enough to raise suspicion."
Corean exhaled slowly, his golden eyes narrowing. "Monakre has remained neutral for decades, despite its strategic position between Altera and our southern borders. For them to send a delegation so suddenly..." He trailed off, his mind already calculating the political ramifications.
Tori smirked, amused by his train of thought. "Keiran Arin and Yei Lin have already infiltrated their ranks. As we speak, they are dressed as mere attendants, listening and observing. But we need to assume that Monakre has done the same. We cannot afford to let our guard down."
Corean leaned back against the plush cushions, running a hand through his thick brown hair. "So, what do we know so far?"
Tori pulled a parchment from the folds of her gown, unfolding it with deliberate slowness. "Their leader is Duke Aldric Vairon, a seasoned diplomat and one of the most influential nobles in Monakre. He is sharp, unpredictable, and is rumored to have been one of the king's closest advisors before his sudden disappearance five years ago."
Corean arched a brow. "Disappearance?"
"Yes. Some say he was assassinated. Others claim he defected. But now, he has reemerged as the head of this delegation, meaning whatever game Monakre is playing, he is at the center of it."
The emperor tapped his fingers against the table, his gaze darkening. "And their true purpose?"
Tori exhaled. "Still unknown. But given the political unrest brewing in Altera, I wouldn't be surprised if Monakre is positioning itself to gain leverage over both of our nations."
Corean's jaw tensed. "We need to control the narrative before they do."
Tori stood, her movements elegant yet filled with purpose. "I plan to meet with Duke Vairon personally. I need to gauge his intentions myself."
Corean immediately stood as well, closing the distance between them in mere seconds. His large hands grasped her wrists gently, his touch both possessive and protective. "No. Not alone."
Tori's expression softened as she tilted her head up to look at him. "My love, I am not fragile. I have done this before."
His fingers tightened slightly. "And yet the dangers are greater now than ever. You are my queen, my wife. I will not have you walking into a lion's den unguarded."
Tori chuckled, stepping closer until their breaths mingled. "Then come with me."
Corean's lips parted slightly, caught between resistance and reluctant agreement. "You know I cannot yet make public appearances."
"Then let me handle this my way." She ran her fingers down his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath the fabric of his robe. "Trust me."
His golden eyes bore into hers, searching, before he finally exhaled. "I do."
