My eyes widened at his touch. As he stroked my hair I began to control my breathing. I looked up to look at Mr. Reeds. He had his head turned slightly away from me, listening to what was going on outside. I took this opportunity to study his rugged features. I know I should be worried about what was happening, but I couldn't take my eyes off of the beautiful man that held me firmly in his arms.
He turned to face me suddenly, making me jump slightly in surprise. "Are you okay?" He asked calmly.
"I think so," I said softly.
He smirked, "Good, I don't need you fainting on me. I'm not very good at mouth to mouth." He said, earning a gasp from me.
"Mr. Reeds!---"
"Call me Daniel." He interrupted.
I replied with "Okay DANIEL." Making sure he heard the sarcasm in my voice.
He looked at me with a surprised face. "Easy now sweet cheeks. We do have to share a very limited amount of space for at least 30 more minutes. You don't want them to be boring do you?" He looked to me and raised his eyebrows.
"Mr. Ree-- I mean Daniel, I am not in the mood to joke around. Do you not realize that we could be spending our last few moments ALIVE inside a closet. This is not exactly how I planned on going out. So if you don't mind I'd like to spend my last moments in peace."
It was quiet for a short amount of time but it was crudely cut short by husky laughter.
I looked at him, furrowing my eyebrows. It only seemed to amuse him further. He laughed even more than he was. When he finally stopped giggling and regained his composure he looked to me. "Well aren't you a drama queen."
I returned a small smile as I looked up to him. "Well given the circumstamces, I'd say this is an appropriate time for dramatics, don't you DANIELLE?"
"Hey now, No need to insult my masculinity." He said, grabbing my hand gently. "And besides, like I said, this has happened before. We are thoroughly prepared. No need to worry Ms. White."
Somehow his words calmed me further. I felt safe in this closet with this man. I then realized that he still had his arms around me.
I pulled away gently and he looked at me, asking for reassurance with his eyes. "Im fine now. Thank you." I said with sincerity.
We sat there in silence for about another five minutes. The sounds of police sirens sounded in the distance. Sounds of breathing filled the small space. We both eventually slid down to sit on the floor, me being the first because my heels were beginning to hurt my feet.
"So when do we know everything is over?" I asked, breaking the silence.
He rubbed the back of his neck with his hand. "Honestly?... I have no idea. We haven't exactly come up with that solution just yet. There are multiple safe rooms located on every floor. Each one guarded with steel plates. When we are in lockdown, all of our staff are safely secured into those rooms. They are locked with passcodes that only I, and the security guards have. The only people who should be wandering the building right now are the security guards and possibly the criminal."
I sighed, leaning my head back against the wall. "What a wonderful first day," I said sarcastically.
"Does that mean you'll stay?" He asked me, looking into my eyes. "I can assure your safety and I'll give you a 10% raise if you do."
"Make it 20% and you have yourself a deal Mr. Reeds." I replied. Why the hell are you staying? I honestly have no fucking clue why Im agreeing to this. Any sane person would go running for the hills. But I can't shake the feeling that this is what's best for me. There's a magnetic pull between me and this company. Always has been. I feel like I belong here.
Here in this building. And even here in this closet with Daniel Reeds.
