Koji woke gasping.

His chest heaved like he'd been drowning in his sleep, like something had been there—pressing down, pulling at the very center of him. The air felt too thin, the darkness of his room too loud, thick with a silence that rang in his ears.

His eyes darted across the space, half-expecting... something. Someone. But there was no one.Just him, alone in the early hours—still dark outside, the sky a muted blue-black bruised with stars.

His heart thudded. Hard. Uneven. Betrayed.

There was no sound, no movement, but he still reached for his chest like it might quiet the storm inside. Something had touched him. Reached into him with warmth, and—left. Not drifted. Not faded. Left.

And even though he couldn't name it, couldn't explain why the absence stung so much, one word rang clear and cruel in his head:

Rejected.

Koji didn't understand why it felt so personal, why his entire being curled in on itself like a scolded child. It was just a dream, wasn't it? Just a weird, vivid—too vivid—dream.

His fingers trembled as he curled in on himself, trying to push the ache down. That aching thread in his chest... it was gone now. Not snapped. Not cut. Just... unfinished. Left open like a sentence without a period.

Then his eyes landed on it.

The keychain.

It lay quiet on his bed beside him, the red stone glinting faintly in the dark as though it had its own pulse. The tiny vial shimmered with thick red liquid, catching the meager light like it was alive. Watching.

He stared, hesitant. That hadn't been there when he went to sleep, had it?

Koji reached for it, almost afraid it would vanish if he blinked. The moment his fingers brushed the stone, a strange calm pulsed through him—slow, steady, like a heartbeat not his own.

Warm.

His breath hitched, eyes burning again with emotions he couldn't explain. This—this tiny object—felt like an apology, a whisper without words: I didn't want to hurt you. I didn't mean to leave.

The rejection didn't leave... but it eased. Just a little.

Like whoever had pulled away hadn't truly gone.

He curled onto his side, still clutching the stone, and pulled it close to his chest like a tether he didn't know he needed. He didn't understand it. Not fully. But it felt like a promise—one that steadied the ache enough for him to let the darkness take him again.

Koji fell back asleep with tears unshed and the keychain warm in his grasp.

Koji blinked awake to a faint warmth on his face. Morning light filtered through the curtains in pale streaks, cutting through the stillness like hesitant fingers. His eyes felt heavy, not from sleep, but from something deeper—like his soul had been wrung out and left to dry in silence.
