As Charlie walked up to the Cullen house, Carlisle opened the door with a welcoming smile.
"Hello, Charlie," he greeted.
"Where's Bella?" Charlie asked, his voice filled with concern.
Carlisle motioned for Charlie to come inside. "Right this way," he said, leading him to the living room where Bella sat on the couch beside Edward.
"Bella?" Charlie's eyes widened as he took in the sight of his daughter.
"Hi, Dad," Bella replied, forcing a smile.
"Are you okay?" Charlie asked, his brows furrowing in worry.
"Never better. Healthy as a horse," Bella assured him, trying to sound cheerful.
Charlie's expression shifted slightly. "You don't turn into an animal, too, do you?"
Bella chuckled and shook her head. "No, Dad. I think I'll pass on that."
Jacob, who had been watching from the doorway, chimed in, "She wishes she was that awesome."
Edward nodded toward Jacob. "Let's give them some privacy," he suggested, leading Carlisle and Jacob out of the room.
Once they were alone, Charlie sat down next to Bella on the couch, his gaze serious. "Uh, Jake said that this... this was necessary. What does that mean?"
Bella hesitated, feeling the weight of the truth she couldn't share. "I really think it would be better if I—"
"I want to know what happened to you," Charlie interrupted, his voice firm.
"I can't tell you," Bella replied, her heart aching at the thought of keeping secrets.
"I think I deserve an explanation," Charlie insisted, his frustration evident.
"You do. But if you really need one, I can't stay here," Bella said, her voice trembling.
"Come on! No! No more going away!" Charlie exclaimed, his eyes pleading.
"Dad, you're just gonna have to trust that for whatever reason, I'm all right. I'm more than all right. Can you live with that?" Bella asked, desperation creeping into her tone.
"Can I live with that? Well, I don't know, Bella. I just watched a kid I've known his entire life turn into a very large dog. My daughter looks like my daughter—but doesn't," Charlie replied, a mix of confusion and concern in his voice.
"Can you please just believe that I'll tell you anything that you need to know?" Bella urged.
"And I don't need to know this?" Charlie asked, crossing his arms.
"No. Really, you don't," Bella said firmly.
Charlie sighed, his expression softening. "Well... I'm not gonna lose you again. I can't."
"Then you won't. I promise," Bella reassured him.
With that, Charlie pulled Bella into a tight embrace. "I missed you, Bells. So much."
"I missed you too, Dad," Bella whispered, her heart swelling with love for him.
Just then, Edward walked into the room, holding Renesmee in his arms, a proud smile on his face. "Charlie. This is Renesmee."
"Your niece?" Charlie asked, his eyes darting from Edward to the baby.
"Our daughter," Edward replied, the words hanging in the air with a sense of finality.
"Right. The adoption," Charlie said, glancing back at Renesmee, who was cooing softly.
"Renee-semee? She's got your eyes, Bella. Need to know, I guess," Charlie remarked, a hint of awe in his voice.
