The night was serene, a cool breeze dancing around the balcony where Kaya sat, her legs tucked under her and her shawl wrapped tightly around her shoulders. The dim glow from the street lamps below flickered, casting shadows on her face. Her thoughts were clouded with a mess of emotions-something she hadn't allowed herself to confront until now. She had been carrying this weight for far too long. And now, with Shiv around, everything seemed to be spinning out of control.
Kaya had been on the verge of telling him everything about her divorce she had started to speak, but the cry of their baby had interrupted, pulling Shiv away from her. Now that he was back, she tried to continue the conversation, hoping to let out everything that had been eating her from the inside.
But as she looked at Shiv, something held her back. He had come back from the nursery, his presence always so firm, yet gentle, with a quiet authority that seemed to speak volumes without him saying much. He stood in the doorway for a moment, looking at her with those eyes-eyes that seemed to see right through her.
"Kaya..." he said, his voice low and steady, "do you want to continue from where we were interrupted or should we wrap it?"
Kaya glanced up at him, still clutching her shawl tighter around her, her heart racing. There was so much she wanted to share, but she wasn't sure where to begin. Before she could say anything, Shiv shook his head, his gaze softening.
"I don't need to know everything about your past," he said, taking a slow step closer to her. "If you're okay with what you've shared, then that's enough for me. I don't need to dig into your past to know who you are right now. I want to be here for you, not for the story of what was."
Kaya was taken aback by his words. She had expected him to ask for more, to probe deeper into the chapters of her life that she hadn't been able to close. But his response was completely different. He wasn't asking her to relive the pain. He was simply asking if she was okay.
His words lingered in the air, heavy and comforting. Kaya's chest tightened as she stared at him. He was telling her that her past was not something he wanted to hold against her. That whatever she had been through-he didn't need to know it all. He wanted to be part of her present, of the woman standing in front of him.
"I'm content, Kaya," he continued, his voice growing softer, more sincere. "Whatever you shared, I'm at peace with that. All I need to know is that you're okay now... that you're here with me."
She let out a breath she didn't even realize she was holding. His words weren't what she expected, but they had an undeniable comfort to them. Still, there was something else inside her-a confusion that gnawed at her heart. She couldn't hold it back any longer.
"But you... you confuse me." She looked away, unable to meet his gaze. "One moment you're distant, and the next, you're caring for me in a way no one ever has. You show me affection, and then... you pull away. You make me feel wanted, but then you leave me wondering if this is even real."
Shiv's jaw tightened slightly as he heard the tremor in her voice. He took another step closer, closing the distance between them. His eyes softened with understanding, but there was also an intensity behind them that she could not ignore.
"I know," he said quietly. "I've been confusing. But that's because I can't make sense of it all either. I didn't plan on feeling this way, Kaya. I didn't expect to be standing here, telling you that I like you, that I want this marriage to work, but... here I am. I don't want to leave any part of you behind. Your past... it doesn't matter. What matters is what we build now. What matters is you."
Kaya felt her pulse quicken, the emotions swirling in her chest threatening to spill over. She wanted to say something-anything-but the words caught in her throat. There was too much. She had already felt her heart begin to open up to him, even when she was trying so hard to guard it. She was scared of being vulnerable again. Scared that once she let him in completely, there would be no turning back.
