I stared at her openmouthed.
This was my MOTher.
"That's not funny." I said.
"It wasn't meant to be." She replied.
Ha. So what was it? The truth? I almost laughed
"Your father is in the hospital what's so funny?" My mother snapped.
"Um, the fact that, he's not!"
My mother gave an exasperated sigh. "Look, I am tired of playing your little games. If you want to play pretend, then play with someone else."
"I am NOT playing pretend." I retorted.
"Avery, if you dont accept the fact that your father is in the danger of dying, then I guess I have wasted my time." she started to get up.
I don't know why I stopped her. "Wait, just, wait."
She looked at me impatiently.
"Prove it." I said.
She sat back down. "I can't."
"Then I refuse to believe it." and I meant my words. My father was a safe driver, and always was. My mother was just lying to me, like she always did.
"Then I guess I should be leaving." She got up, completely this time. "You can handle this with your counselor." she gestured to Mrs. Samples, who was waiting outside patiently, as she had been after that mother of mine had asked to be alone. I didn't stop her this time.
Mrs. Samples walked in. "Avery, your mother wasn't lying to you." oh yeah, almost forgot, the office walls aren't very soundproof.
"Whatever. Can I leave now?" I said, already helping myself out the door.
She dismissed me.
Everyone stared at me as I walked out. Nope. The walls aren't soundproof at all.

At lunch, I explained everything to my friends.
"But the thing is-"
"Hi Avery!" Some random girl said.
"Hi! Anyway, he couldn't have, he's never ever been in an accident. Besides-"
"Hey Avery!" A girl from my science class said.
"Hey. Anyways besides it the kind of thing my mom would do. Pull a joke and laugh. But I'm not falling for it this time." I took a breath.
"I dont know. Maybe, maybe she's telling the truth Avery." Taylor said.
"Ya, maybe you should go and make sure." Abby said.
"She already did." Taylor turned to Abby.
"She did not. Did you Avery?" they both turned to look at me, and I shrugged. This seemed to satisfy them because they both smiled.
I turned to Izzy.
"What?" She asked.
"Nothing. Just, what do you think?" I asked. I was actually starting to worry.
"I agree with Taylor and Abby."
I looked at her in question.
"Go make sure."
I looked at her some more.
"Fine." I pushed in my chair, and walked out of the cafeteria, and I didn't realize until we were out in the halls that the rest were following me.
I stepped in the office, and walked straight for Mrs. Samples office. If the ladies outside protested at all, u didn't hear them. I barged right in, and left Abby, Taylor and izzy outside.
-------
I walked out with shaky hands, and Abby Taylor and Iz stood outside expectantly.
"It's true." I whispered. And ran out, pushing them aside, before they could see the tears falling from my face.
