"What are you talking about??" Abby exclaimed.

"A D?!?" Taylor remarked.

"Look I know, but-"

"You have to have a C- or higher to make it in the cheer team!!" Abby reminded me of what I already knew.

"Oh joy." I rolled my eyes. "I know! Mr. Jenkins is willing to give me a C- or higher if I write a 1000 word essay on the Meaning of life."

"Oh good. We couldn't be on the team without you!

You're going to do the extra credit, right?" Taylor asked.

"Duh." I said.

We were up against the back wall of the building, talking away, but my mind was somewhere else. My mother had made me come to school, saying,

'Even in a moment of crisis, you have to work your brain. It'll get your mind off of things.'

Well my English teacher had just informed me I had a D. Obviously I was going to do the essay, but not for cheer. Making The cheer team was the last thing on my mind.

When i was little, my dad would fly to business trips every month. The trips ranged from a weekend to two weeks.

Every time he came home, he would ruffle my hair and ask how i was doing. And he would always ask me how it was at school.

I wasn't the best student, I'll give you that, but I tried, I honestly did.

My daddy used to tell me, every time you miss me, just keep working hard on your school work, knowing how much I hated that, and that the harder I worked, the more sure I could be that he was coming home.

I knew my grades had nothing to do with the accident, but I just tried harder.

"Uh, Avery to Ground Tower. How's the view from space?" Abby waved her hand in front of my face like a five year old, while Iz and Taylor rolled their eyes.

"It's beautiful, actually. Even more beautiful when I realize your face isn't stuffed up to mine."

Abby slapped my arm playfully. "What were you thinking about?"

"Wouldn't you want to know." Iz smirked. She looked over at me and smiled. I smiled right back.

Taylor was typing furiously on her phones keyboard.

"Guys, there's a cat fight in the main hallway!" She exclaimed excitedly.

"No way!" Abby gushed, already forgetting about me.

"Who's in it?" Iz asked.

"Um, Daphne and some other new girl."

"Daphne?" I asked surprised. Ha. I'd love to see this.

"So? Are we just going to stand here?" Taylor looked at us expectantly.

We rolled our eyes, but followed when she started walking towards the doors to the main hallway.

We pushed through a crowd to get to the front. There Daphne was punching a girl in the guts, on her face, everywhere. "You - " Daphne called this girl every word in the dictionary.

"I-" the girl tried to reply, but was punched again.

Finally Daphne pushed the girl to the floor, leaving her moaning.

"What are you looking at?" She snapped at the crowd, and it started to disperse.

But I stayed put. Because when the girl turned over onto her back to where I could see her face, I recognized her.

Kelly? Or Katie? No, it was... My mind picked at the names til one fit.

Kerri. Where had I seen her before?
