In honour of the Oscar leading the championship, I figured why not throw this out there. It's a follow on from the Epilogue (the last chapter), based off of the original ending, not the alternate ending. This story just has my heart and I don't think I'll ever be able to replicate it.

Turning down the heat on the stove, I watched as the water came to a simmer, bubbling over the pasta. P swirled a wooden spoon around the pot, giggling at the foamy waves that spawned as a result.
"All right," I beamed, "Put the lid on."
She obliged quickly, "Like that?"
I readjusted the lid, so that a small gap let out the steam, "Perfect."
She grinned at me, swaying her legs contently.
It had become a common occurance over the past year for Max and Kelly to ask me to watch over P. Whether to avoid paying a babysitter, or the fact they just wanted time to themselves, I never refused. Maybe because I knew she trusted me. In fact, she often told me how much she loved me. I had become her uncle, in a way - at least that's what she chimed to Max whenever we were apart.
Or maybe because I knew she once trusted Taz, too. He still appeared in her drawings sometimes.
And that was enough for me.
Because it had been a year. A whole year. And I'd do anything to hold onto the remnants of him.
My phone began to buzz from my pocket, just as she extended her arms, asking to be put down from the countertop. Sliding my palms beneath her armpits, I lowered her to the ground, and watched her toddle away.
I answered the call with a smirk, "I thought you said you wouldn't bother me during the summer break."
"I know, I know," Mark chuckled, "Just wanted to check on things."
"They're good." I nodded, leaning on the counter nearby. "Just at Max's for the evening. It's date night and they asked if I could watch over P."
"That's nice of you." He agreed, "Hope she hasn't been too difficult?"
"Never with me."
"Sure Kelly's jealous of that."
"Maybe," I tilted my head with a smile. "We did a jigsaw, watched some Bluey-"
"Bluey?" He interrupted with a laugh. "That dog kids show?"
"It's good!" I laughed back. "Seriously. We watched an episode about cricket. It was really good."
"Cricket? In a dog kids show?"
"Well, there was a moral to the story- it doesn't matter!" I turned, balancing my phone in my ear as I checked on the pasta. "What do you want?"
"Like I said, I just wanted to check on things." He said simply. "Good to hear you're having fun. Whether or not it's about blue dogs-"
"Shut up." I rolled my eyes, only for a set of hands to tug at my trouser leg. "One sec."
P asked innocently, "Can I have a juice?"
"A juice?" I raised a brow.
She pointed at a cupboard near the fridge, and I opened it, revealing a box of vitamin juice cartons. Kelly was always quite specific on what P could have when, but I figured the fact it had Vitamin B, C and E in bold meant it was good enough. I ripped one out of the pack, passing it down to her.
