The Hatfield family were a rich family (and well known). It contained those kinds of people at school who believed that they owned everything and everyone, you know, the ones you usually don't like. The kind of people who only had a select group of people that were allowed to be seen with them. Yes, the Hatfield's belonged to that sort of social group.
It would have been nice to be able to say that at some point this family was, once, a nice family however it isn't the case. There is a period in their history which is suspiciously blank which made people wonder what they were like then but the rest of their history is pretty much the same. They were the type of family who believed themselves descendants of royalty and believed their reputation was the most important thing about them. This reputation was recorded in a large book that sat in the Hatfield House's library. The Hatfield Book contained information on every member of their family (the few that there were) and their current status. It was expected of each member to have read this book at least once in their lifetime. There was a long-standing rumour that the loose sheet of paper that sat inside the book was put there by an outsider who had been prophesised to be the ruin of the Hatfield's. Obviously, the outsider had not succeeded and the Hatfield family managed to restore themselves to their original glory. However, this sheet of paper caused many discussions to those who heard as it told a secret that perhaps even the Hatfield's themselves didn't want to admit. It said that when a child was born into the family, the parents could tell from their first year whether or not that child was going to be a disappointment to the family or not. If they decided that the child would become a disappointment, the parents would have a second child and when the first child was old enough, they would destroy all records of the child's being and pretend like he or she had never existed. Of course, this information was not necessarily true but it was there for people to wonder about.
Esme Hatfield hadn't exactly been told that she was the newest Disappointment Child but the fact that she had a younger brother gave her a good idea that she was. Esme wasn't particularly bothered about this – she had made the decision to live up to the title as soon as she realised what she was. At this current moment in time, Esme was getting herself prepared to break the news to her parents that she was not going to university and probably never would be. The mirror in front of her displayed a tall, slim figure wielding short, straight, obsidian coloured hair that hugged her head but left her ears exposed to the elements. This was accompanied by eyes the colour of chestnuts and smooth pale skin that seemed to show no flaws or imperfections. Esme straightened her back as she took a deep breath before leaving the safe confines of her bedroom.
She passed Jay's bedroom where the sound of him laughing reached her ears. Her footsteps were silenced by the rug that cascaded down the wooden staircase but her heartbeat pounded loud enough to make up for the disappearance of sound. Her parents, Selina and Robert, were where she expected them to be: their study. It was a place she and Jay were not often allowed in and if they were in there without either of their parents they were sure to be in trouble. The study was where her father conducted most of his business work and where her mother assisted him as well as working on her own little projects.
The knock sounded like a roof had collapsed in the silence of the hallway and the muffled "Enter!" was a stark contrast in comparison. The door was pushed open and the insides of the room were revealed. The walls were a snowfall of white with a wooden chocolate layer as the floor. The desks were clear and the computers on top of them were the newest and best that could be found. bookcases and storage spaces lined the back wall and each desk was on the opposite side of the room to each other, their sides exposed to whoever entered the room. The one on the left was occupied by a man with the same black hair splashed with marks of white and the same brown eyes as his daughter. The right was occupied by a woman with a similar figure to Esme who had died her long hair the same colour so as to match.
