--------------------------------

"Do you have to go?" I asked, looking up into his icy blue eyes that looked nowhere near cold.

"Yes Hiccup, I'm a Guardian now, I have responsibilities and I have people counting on me, I can't let them down." he said, brushing a stray strand of my brown hair out of my eyes.

"I'm counting on you." I said with a slight pout. I know I was being childish but I really didn't want him to go. He chuckled softly and kissed my nose.

"Yes and you always can but I can't skip out on this." He said seriously.

"I'll miss you."

"I'll miss you too, you're so cute." He pinched my cheek and made a small smile slip onto my face.

"But...you'll come back right?" I asked, looking at the bright summer grass. He smiled again and lifted my chin so I met his eyes.

"I'll be back before you even know I'm gone." He kissed me and I didn't hesitate in returning it before we broke apart.

"Be careful." I said and he chuckled slightly, "I'm serious Jack, don't try to be the hero. For me? Please?" I pleaded with him, he just looked at me with those warm loving eyes.

"Yeah, yeah ok." He said in a joking tone.

"Promise?" I demand, making him roll his eyes.

"Promise." He said, sealing the deal with a kiss. "It's just Pitch." He tried to reassure me although it didn't really work.

He pulled back and grabbed his staff.

"I love you." I called as he was about to take off. He glanced back at me and gave me a heartwarming look.

"I love you too, Hiccup. And I always will."

And with that he took off into the sky. I watched until he was out of sight, feeling the familiar chill of whenever he came or went.

I stood there for another minute or two before shoving my hands into my pockets and walking out of the forest, already missing the feel of Jack's hand in mine.

--------------------------------

"Merida! You wanted to see me? It sounded urgent over the phone." I said, running closer into the clearing where the fiery redhead stood ringing her hands.

When I got to her all she did was look at me nervously.

"Mer? What happened?" I asked again in a worried tone. She sucked in a shaky breath and grabbed my hand.

"Hiccup, did no one tell you?" She asked in a sad voice.

"Told me what? What's going on? " I questioned once again, ripping my hand away. She winced before taking another deep breath.

"There was an ambush, with Pitch. Jack, he didn't make it." My heart stopped.

No, those words didn't come out of her mouth, this wasn't happening. No no NO.

"What do you mean he didn't make it?!" I asked in panic, gripping her arms.

"He sacrificed himself, the Guardians sent me to find you, to talk to you, I thought someone had told you..." she trailed off.

I stumbled a few steps back and clutched my chest.

"I...I can't deal with this right now." I mumbled before running. I heard her yelling my name after me but I didn't stop, I didn't stop until I made it to our apartment. My apartment? This was all too much to take in.

I closed the door behind me before sliding down it and letting out a sob filled with agony.

"Hiccup? Is that you? Hiccup?! Are you ok? Talk to me." I heard our next door neighbor and good friend Rapunzel pounding on the door behind me but I ignored it as I curled into a ball and let out my tears.

Jack was...gone. My partner, my other half, my everything. He was gone. I didn't even get a proper goodbye, just an until next time. And no one bothered to tell me!

I sobbed into my arms until I finally got the strength to stand up and make my way to ou-my room. I threw open the door to the closet and grabbed the first thing of his I saw, which happened to be a ratty old hoodie.

Hugging it close to my chest I laid down on the bed and cried.

And cried.

And cried.

Jack was...gone.
