I was running as fast as my legs could carry my on the frostbitten stone path and down an alleyway to my right, I shivered in the cold as I squatted quickly behind the dumpster, holding my breath as I heard them run past me.
"Which way did she go?
"I don't know, you take that alley and I'll keep going on, call if you find her"
I listened quietly as one of them continued running down the street and the other came my way.
I panicked and lost my balance slightly, to regain it I placed my hand behind me knocking over an empty paint tin.
I could see the disgusting smirk slide onto his face as he came closer down the alley and all I could do was wait for him to find me. I only outran them this time because I had a head start, running would ensure them catching me.
I heard him light a cigarette and call up his companion, he blew out a grey cloud of smoke before reporting in.
"Yeah, Judas? I found her"
I kicked myself internally and was beginning to think that running was my only option when there was a crash further down the alleyway and as it had caught my attention, it had caught his too.
"Damn it! she's on the run, meet me back at the van, I'll have her by then."
He quickly shoved his phone in his pocket and stomped out his cigarette before running down towards the noise.
Not realising I was still holding my breath I let out a sigh of relief and stood up. The air still smelled of smoke which caused me to wrinkle my nose with revulsion at the vile smell. I untucked my hair from the snow covered beanie tossing it aside. As I ran my fingers through my hair the snow started to lightly fall again as it had been before those two morons started chasing me. I sighed again watching the vapour disappear and put my hands in the pocket of my jumper for warmth.
I'm not a criminal, or at least it's not the police chasing me for crimes a may or may not have committed. No, these people have been chasing ever since I woke up in that damned burt up apartment.
I shook my head started walking back the way I came. It was dark, almost midnight and knowing I couldn't go back on the main street I paused thinking of the map of the city from what I remember. I admit, the city was a bad idea, but I needed money and this is where all the rich stoops live, I remember that from my last visit.
I have a pretty good memory, photographic some call it, usually if I hear or see something important, I can remember it. Personally I think its because I can't remember anything before waking up in the apartment.I nimbly jumped up onto a ledge a couple of metres above me, it took a bit of practice to begin with but now climbing and scaling buildings seems almost natural. I smiled slightly at myself and continued to climb to the roof. Why did these damned buildings have to be so high?
I was out of breath when I reached the roof and lay down instantly on the concrete roof.As I reached my gloved hands above my head, I watched the snow catch onto the wool and slowly melt away. The sky is black but with no stars to be seen, it's been this way for 3 years, no stars. One of the only things I do remember from before was the stars... looking up on a snowing night and in between the breaks of snow, were the stars, bright and clear...
At least the moon stayed, it's changed, it's always full and people are starting to question if it's real or just another man made object from the government to keep people sane.
I rolled onto my side and almost screamed as I came nose to nose with a cat.
I sighed frustrated
"Simin you scared the day out of me!"
I rolled onto my back and sat up, to which Simin responded by curling up in my lap. I smiled and stroked his fur, listening to him gently pur."That was you back in the ally wasn't it? You lead them away from me"
I softly kissed his head.
"Thank you."I leaned back on my hands and looked up at the sky again, it was still snowing, but lightly now.
I sat with Simin on my lap for another good 20 minutes before picking the sleeping cat up and walking to the edge of the building, just watching over the edge at the blinking city lights, shinning for miles on end into the distance.
