A hot greenleaf wind rustled the leaves above the camp. All of RiverClan was silent, save for the soft trickling sound of rushing water from the nearby stream. The cats waited with hushed breaths as their leader stepped before them, followed by his deputy and two kits, both bounding in small leaps to catch up with his long strides. He sat down and gave the notion for the other cats to do the same.

"Cats of RiverClan, I gather you all for one of my favourite duties. Amberkit and Dewkit have reached their sixth moon and I believe they are ready to be apprenticed." The Clan meowed their approval, many excited yowls howling together. Longstar waited for them to be quiet before continuing.

"Amberkit, please step forward." The kit's amber eyes shone brightly as she padded to her place in front of the Clan leader. She was so excited, she hardly even heard her sister's grumpy remark behind her. "Amberkit, from this day on you will be known as Amberpaw. I ask StarClan to watch over you and guide you until your paws are big enough to be a Warrior's."

All of RiverClan gave excited meows of approval. Amberpaw fluffed her fur up with pride.

"Whitetail," Longstar called. A large cream-coloured tom stood up from within the huddled mass of cats. His light tail stuck up high above him, alert.

"You have received excellent mentoring from Stormheart and it is time you deserved the chance to be a mentor yourself. Guide this young apprentice with all the courage and skill your mentor showed you."

The warrior dipped his head, "I won't let you down, Longstar." Amberpaw hurried forward, pressing her nose gently against her mentor's. She couldn't stop her smile.

"Amberpaw! Amberpaw!"

The RiverClan leader once again waited for the yowls to stop. He turned around to the remaining kit behind him, her head hunched over to stare at the wet ground beneath her white paws. "Dewkit, come forward and receive your apprentice name."

The small kit slunk over, her gaze never leaving the ground. She clambered her way across the small stretch of grass and sat beside the powerful tom before her. Dewkit froze as his deep voice rumbled throughout the camp, "Dewkit, from this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Dewpaw."

Once again the Clan erupted in cheers, Dewpaw noticed with a small twinge of jealousy that they were not as enthusiastic as they had been with Amberpaw.

Longstar searched the crowd until his gaze fell upon a small tabby warrior, "Smalltooth, you will be her mentor."

Dewpaw looked into the crowd to see her mentor. A small, black and brown she-cat stood up and walked forward, her eyes gleaming and her face plastered with happiness.

"Smalltooth, you are ready to take on this apprentice. I know that I am putting her in safe paws. I expect you to pass on all you know to her."

Smalltooth touched her nose against Dewpaw's and whispered a soft, "Hello."

The new apprentice drew back sharply and looked the warrior in the eye. Her mentor looked down at her happily and blinked before turning her head into the crowd.

"Dewpaw! Dewpaw!"

"No, not like that. Keep your tail out straight when you balance."

Dewpaw fell onto the ground immediately, her fur covered in dust and leaves. She stood up to shake off the dirt and saw her sister expertly balanced in a stalking position further ahead, her mentor proudly meowing approval. The grey apprentice sighed and sat down to lick off the leaves.
