Mermay Day 9: Jellyfish

The ocean was stained with the same orange-pink as the dusky sky above. The current tapered off until the water was still. You had been content to ride the current back to your home, but clearly you had made a mistake along the way.

The water around you began to light up as tiny bioluminescent jellyfish began to glow in the darkening sea. They were tiny, harmless, and you honestly thought they were kind of cute.

But the farther you sank, the bigger the jellyfish got. Ones even bigger than you pulsed with light. You eyed their tentacles with anxiety. One sting from those and you'd probably die.

You tried to swim upwards, but the current had abandoned you, making the water thick and your movements extra difficult. Your tail kicked hard and you were propelled only a little ways up. Panic was starting to set in as the jellyfish drifted closer.

"Lost?"

The raspy voice startled you out of your desperate swimming. You whipped your head around every which way, trying to find the speaker. Finally, one of the giant electric-blue jellyfish floated into view, the torso of a man coming up from its soft top.

The man was covered in burns and badly scarred. You wondered if that's what happened if you were to touch his tentacles.

He watched you lazily, leaning back so that his tentacles floated ever closer. His arms crossed behind his head as a smirk grew on his lips. His eyes, as electric blue as his jellyfish body and half-lidded, were too sharp for comfort.

Receiving no response, he leaned forward and swam towards you. You flinched, your tail swishing to make some space between you. He cocked his head slightly, burnt lips curling into a larger smirk.

"Yeah, definitely lost."

Something soft brushed your ankle and you jerked it away. As you did, a blue tendril wrapped around your wrist. Another looped around your tail.

"You don't want to touch them," Dabi warned conversationally, "They'll burn right through your pretty skin."

You whimpered, trying to stay as still as possible as tendrils began to curl around your arms.

"And you?" Dabi chuckled, "You look much too pretty all tied up. I think I'll have to keep you."
