During the drive it was the same routine. Drive, rest stop, drive, food, switch drivers, drive, restroom, repeat.
Jake and Emilyn would sing along to the radio sometimes, while Ms. Garner would listen. She didn't know the words so she just listened. If they weren't singing they were on their phone, coloring, talking, or sleeping.
"How many more miles until we're Nevada?" Emilyn asked tired of the drive.
"According to the GPS, we have 100 miles. Soooooo about two and a half hours." Jake said looking at her.
"Ugh" Emilyn rolls her eyes and noticed how hot its gotten with the windows down. "Can you roll up the windows?"
After three hours of singing and talking Emilyn looks at the clock. "Are we there YET?" At the end everyone can hear the irritation in her voice.
"Hey hold on. Dads calling." Jake picked up his phone and started talking. "What?....You moved where?...Henderson?...What?.....Ok...Whats the address?" He hung up and looked at Ms. Garner. "So... Change of plans. Dad moved to Henderson."
"Cool thats like an hour from vegas." Ms. Garner says. "Put the address in the thing-y..." She points to the GPS.
"Mkay" He puts it in and they hear the GPS say 'rerouting'.
"Turn left in one mile" a female voice comes from the GPS.
"Okay Ma'am." Ms. Garner is very bubbly when saying this.
Emilyn turns the music up and sings along. "I love Panic! At the Disco!!" She shouts over the blasting music.
"Isnt this This is Gospel?" Jake asks.
"What?!" Emilyn shouts, music too loud to hear him. He turned down the music.
"Is this, This is Gospel?"
"Yeah!" She is ecstatic that her favorite band is playing, and that he recognized it.
An hour passed and everyone is overheating.
"How hot is it?" Ms. Garner has switched and now Emilyn is driving.
Jake responds to her after checking his phone "A hundred degrees. Its hot as hell here isnt it?"
"Yeah but we have 5 minutes until you get to your dads. Mom and i have an hour to get to the house." She glares at the road while driving.
When they arrive at his dads, they get his few boxes and put it in the garage.
"You only live an hour away please visit. Ill visit you too okay?" Emilyn is terrified she'll lose Jake after losing Hazel. Tara won't let Hazel call more than once a month. Hazel will forget Emilyn anyway with all her friends.
"I promise i will okay? Dont freak. Ill text you everyday anyway."
"Okay," Emilyn cant help but smile, "dont break your promise!" She says getting back in the car.
"When have i ever?!" Jake yells as an answer while they drive away. As soon as they arent in sight, he starts to unpack.
"Are you gonna be okay?" Her mom asks as they drive away.
"I dont know yet. If they text me and i get to visit i might survive." They both laugh but Emilyn's is weaker. She is terrified of what she'd be without him. She didnt like him as a crush but she did want him with her. Not in a 'romantic' way but a friend way. She wanted to always be able to hang out with him, talk to him whenever, and just be able to have someone she trusted there with her.
