"I should've told you the truth long ago but you were so young." "I can't believe this." "Yeah, I can't believe you would leave us like that!" The boy shouted. "Founding out what you did has put nothing but misery on me." "I know, you have a fragile heart." The boy looked at her, "you have a fragile heart?" "Emotion wise." Suddenly, she fell to her knees in pain. "What's wrong?" He asked concerningly but he fell down as well. The two adults looked at each other, "it's starting."
Blue didn't seem like herself today, she kept getting annoyed easily and snapping at people hear and there. "You okay, Blue?" I asked, "Yeah, just have to see my grandmother today, that's all." Her grandmother has dementia and sometimes it gets a little hard for Blue to see her. Her parents died in a horrible car crash but her older brother and her survived. Their grandmother took care of them until she got dementia when Blue was twelve. Her brother then took her in at his apartment when he was going to college and ever since then, she's been living with him. They have a close relationship since they only have each other. It's sweet when you think about it. "I can always go with you and your brother." I saw their grandmother before so it won't be the first time, "you would?" She asked, "yeah, I have nothing to do really since it's my day off at work." I work at the frozen yogurt place with Xena, it's a bit difficult now but I'll manage through it. "Thank you so much!" She hugged me very tightly, "you're welcome." I laughed. "Do you want to stay over too?" She asked, "Sure. I have stayed over in a while so it'd be nice." I smiled. "How your brother?" "Working. You still have a crush on him?" She asked with a smile. "No, he's like ten years older than us." "Yeah, so?" "So, I don't want to cause trouble cause you know what happens." "True but still." We laughed.
We drove up to the retirement center and sat for a bit. "You ready?" I asked, "nope but let's get it over with. My brother will be here in a little bit." "Okay." We got out of the car and headed inside. She said hello to the receptionist and signed her name. When it comes to signing, she uses her real name "Sapphire Winters." We went into the elevator and headed to the third floor where there were a lot of old ladies trying to walk around and stuff. "Just down the hall." "Okay."
"Grandma it's me, I brought you some flowers." Her grandmother was in the intensive care floor, it meant her dementia was getting worse. "Oh thank you." She kissed her on the cheek. "Grandma, I brought my friend Amy here with me." "Hi, Mrs. Winters." "Oh hello." She was such a sweet and gentle lady, the only thing that set her back was her condition. "Now tell me, who are you?" She asked, "Grandma it's Sapphire." "Oh Blue." She laughed, "now, how was the first grade today?" Her face grew serious, "Grandma, I'm in my senior year of high school." "Oh really?" She stood up, "Yeah." The room grew silent, "it was nice seeing you grandma." She turned to me, "I'll be in the car. Then she ran into her brother, "I told you this was a stupid idea." And then she walked out. "What happened?" He asked, "I don't know.""What happened, Blue?" He asked, "Grandma is getting worse and worse." I was sitting in the living room, listening awkwardly. "Yeah, that means we should go see her more." "No, Damien, it's just gonna get harder and harder to see her rot away like that. She's not gonna remember us in the end so why go?" She asked, "to bring her memory back." "You can't bring her back!" She shouted. "We have to try!" "You can't bring someone with dementia back, they only get worse from this point on. And I don't want to be there when it does happen." "Can you tell me why?" He asked as she was walking into her bedroom, "cause the day grandma loses all her memory is the day I will lose her. And I just can't bare the pain. She closed the door and curled up in her dark room. Damien sat on the couch, feeling stressed. "They told me that she's starting the final stage. She's starting to lose more and more of her memory everyday. But some things come back." "Oh like when she asked Blue how the first grade was?" I asked, "yeah. It was a repetitive thing for my grandma to say that to Blue so that's why she remembers that when Blue has to say her name. But everything else is just being wiped clean. And I don't think Blue can handle it." "I wouldn't be able to handle it either if I was in her shoes." "Blue is such a bright and vibrant human being, it's sad to see her like that when it comes to family." I half smiled.
"Blue? Everything okay?" I asked, "yeah, kinda." I sat next to her, "I just don't want to lose my grandmother. But I know she can't stay forever." I half-smiled, "I wish I could do something. But don't blame your brother for this, he was just trying to help." "Help?" She questioned, "yeah, he just wanted you to see your grandma before it's too late. Cause you will regret it later in life, and you won't be happy with the results." "I know. I was just angry." She got up and walked out the door where Damien was standing in the kitchen, trying to think of something to eat. Blue walked up to him and gave him a hug, telling him that she was sorry.
"So have you decided whether you're going home or not?" Blue asked, "Not yet." "Hey, has anyone seen Cherry?" I asked, "No but we have makeup class today so she better be here." Blue laughed. "So are you gonna go home?" Fran asked, "I don't know, I may approach them but I don't know if I'm going home." "Well hey, it's a start." I smiled and sighed, "yeah."
