(Scarlett’s POV)
Everything made sense now, the CDs, the strange behavior of Matt, Sam, and Holly. They already knew I was going to be the lead singer. There was no audition. It was an imaginary show with me as the star.
“Hey Scar? You alright there? You kinda look like you zoned out there…” Sam said looking over at me with concern. We were in Matt’s living room, which had for a bachelor pad looked nice. Fluffy pillows adorned the couches and pine inn tables matched the color scheme of the walls. Right now the band (now including me) was talking about the “winner” of the audition.
“Yeah, perfect,” I said flashing my pearly whites at him. That was 100 percent sarcasm in my head.
“Great,” Sam replied innocently. I immediately knew something was up, “Why don’t we watch a video?”
All of a sudden the whole room was quiet. Everyone was hushed and looked at Sam like he was insane.
Matt started clearing his throat and glanced nervously at me, “Sam… I don’t think that’s a great –”
“I’d love to Sam!” I said cheekily, while batting my eyes. I was going to get to the bottom of this even though I was pretty sure that I knew what the tape was going to be.
Sam was more than happy to comply. He trotted over to the stairs to go and get something as happy as a puppy.
“Scar, are you sure you want to watch a video? I have cable and –” Matt said desperation climbing his throat. What was so bad about this video?
“Yes, Matt. I’m a grown woman! I think I can make my own decisions,” I replied curtly. Jeez, I can make my own choices! I’m not a three-year-old that needs babysitting. Matt was starting to really irritate me. He’s one of the few people who can get my blood boiling. We sat in a heated silence for what seemed like hours.
Sam finally came back from whatever depths he went to and had a CD –with my name on it. My suspicions were confirmed. It was the CD I had been thinking of. I still didn’t know how they had gotten a video of me. Sam plucked the CD down into the DVD tray and hopped backwards onto the floor.
The plasma screen TV blinked to life as the film popped up on the screen. My back was to the camera and it was recording from… my closet?! I could feel my face heat up. There was no doubt that I looked like a perfectly ripe tomato. Then I heard the familiar chuckle in the background, but from what I was already seeing, that wasn’t the worst to come.
There I was dressed in my skimpy Toadstool boy shorts with a green tank top that showed most my smooth stomach and way too much cleavage. I was dancing like I thought no one was watching. My eyes shot over to Matt who seemed to have pushed himself as far into the couches cushions as possible. He was hiding and I knew who from: me.
Oh, yeah. I remembered when this happened.
It was the day Matt told me about the auditions he was holding for his band. So I decided to go home and practice. Little did I know that there would be a peeping tom recording the whole thing!
I brought my hands to my face to hide my burning face. This is a whole lot more than embarrassing… I could feel the blood pooling into my cheeks making them pulse.
“Oops, it looks like I got the wrong video,” Sam said sweetly, as innocent as an angel. He didn’t fool anybody. He probably wanted some payback for the jinxing wars Matt always won, but believe me when I say there was going to be some revenge.
