One Year Ago:
No one blamed babies when they screamed and cried after they were forced into the world by the hands of doctors and nurses. The nurses simply swaddled the newborn in a blanket and allowed them to shriek as their eyes adjusted to the new light instead of the darkness they were once used to.
Perhaps, that was why when the teenaged girl opened her eyes, she found the urge to scream at the base of her throat, frightened by the unknown sights surrounding her.
The sensation of being aware of her own body gradually returned as she eased back to consciousness. Her eyes squeezed shut after the brightness of the sun overwhelmed her senses and she noticed the warmth against her skin.
The longer she laid against the hard ground of the forest, the more her body worked to understand the current state she physically and mentally found herself in. Nerve receptors raced through her body at lightning speed until they reached skull and alerted her brain of the widespread pain throughout her limbs.
A deep breath pulled through her nostrils as her brown eyes glazed over with tears from the abrupt, debilitating pain exploding in her muscles and bones. Every part of her body felt as if it were beaten by a heavy object and then promptly set on fire.
She forced herself to focus on her breathing to will enough control to roll over on her left side and weakly propped herself up on her elbow. Her teeth gritted together from the excruciating pain radiating throughout her body. Dirt clung to the side of her face.
Her eyes scanned the surrounding area. The confusion within her mind grew stronger as she took notice of the tall trees and bushes in every direction. There was nothing else out there from what she could see.
The girl swallowed the growing lump in her throat, frozen with fear and anxiety at her inability to remember how she ended up in the middle of a forest in the first place. Her mind was completely empty as if it had been wiped clean of any and all memories.
A tightness occurred behind the girl's sternum as a few tears slipped from her eyes. The pounding sensation in her head increased to a deafening amount as she fully pushed herself into seated position on the dirty ground. She tilted her head back on her neck to peer up at the hint of blue sky between the trees.
Her vision blurred from the tears and intense pounding inside of her skull as if her brain was doubling in size and banged against her cranium. She lifted her right hand to brush the tears from her eyes until a silver glint on her wrist caught her attention.
A strange wristband barely hung from her arm and fell to the ground after she gingerly touched the metal band. Several dents were marked in the metal with a crack on one side. She rubbed her wrist, grimacing.
Her gaze trailed from the wristband to the sleeves on her jacket and noticed the tears in the cotton material with blood soaked through. The bloody rips continued through the rest of her clothes with a large cut in her right thigh. Dirt and small rocks were embedded into the bloody wounds.
A wave of nausea overturned in her stomach at the sight of her own leg. The girl sucked in a deep breath before soft sobs wracked out of her body, deeply frightened by the situation she found herself in without knowledge of how she ended up in it.
She mentally dug through her mind, searching for any plausible reason for why she woke up alone in the woods covered in injuries. A dark abyss settled inside her mind with no recollection of her life. The girl cried harder when she realized she didn't even know her own name.
There was nothing except the memories of waking up a few minutes ago.
The dreadful feeling of hopelessness swelled within her chest and pit of her stomach. There was a part of her that knew she had to get up and find someone to help her. The sheer idea of moving caused her body to throb with immense pain.
