Chapter Two

2:50 P.M., LSE, Advanced English

March 16th, 2015

"Your assignment over break is to prepare for your test on To Kill a Mockingbird, which will take place the day after you return from spring break," Mr. Wiggins' assignment was met by an immediate groan from the class. "Oh, well, I could assign a report as well."

"No thank you sir, Kai and I were just talking about how much we were going to study so we ace the test, I think a report would just overload us. Weren't we Kai?" Hannah's voice came from the desk she shared with Kai. After a quick kick beneath the desk, Kai spoke as well.

"Yeah, we were."

After a moment of thought Mr. Wiggins responded, "Miss Springs here has just lowered your five page report to an assignment to find a quote from the book that inspires you and be prepared to share it with the rest of us on the day you return from break."

Kai gave Hannah a high five underneath the desk as the bell rang and everyone packed up and left.

Spirits were up and everyone was excited for break. There were people that were planning on going to the beach, Hawaii, Central America, and one kid even said he was planning on going to Europe. But not Kai and Hannah. They were staying in the city for break. It wasn't as if they didn't have enough money to go anywhere with their families, it was the murders. Hannah's mom couldn't afford to leave at such a crucial time. They were fine with staying, there was cool stuff to do in Greensboro.

As Kai and Hannah walked down the front steps, they were both smiling. Little did they know, someone was watching them.

"You really saved us in English today, y'now that right?" Kai and Hannah were talking on the phone.

"I was saving myself honestly. I did not want to write a five page paper," Hannah replied, letting out a small chuckle.

Kai looked around his small bedroom. His bed had black covers, and his curtains were the same color (Which were pulled open). He had a small closet, one dresser, a small bookcase (filled with books, of course), and a desk that had his computer on it. He walked over to the bookcase and picked up an old book. He flipped it over and was reading the back cover when he realized Hannah was talking.

"...and so I told her 'You need to back off' and she said something really rude that I won't repeat, but isn't that crazy?"

"Okay so I think I understand, but just in case, tell me again I wasn't listening," he set down the book.

"Jerk," Hannah said while laughing.

Kai smiled and walked over to his computer and sat down. "Wanna Skype?"

"Sure, I'll hang up and call you on there."

"Okay."

12:01 A.M., Kai's House

March 17th, 2015

"Wow, we've been on here for three hours?" Kai asked.

"I guess," the response from Hannah. She was wiping tears off her face from laughing so hard from Kai's fish face.

Kai made the face again and they both burst into laughter. He laughed longer than she did which was unusual and he looked at the computer screen. She looked scared, like, near terrified. "Hey, you okay?"

She responded by lifting up her phone and pointing at it. He grabbed his phone and texted her.

what?

It looks like something's behind you.

Kai looked at the computer screen again to see if she was joking, she wasn't. He turned around and saw him. A tall man with a cloak on. The man wasn't wearing the hood to the cloak, and he was grinning wickedly. The cloak was black, with silver symbols inscribed into it. He had jet black hair and everything about his face was normal, except for his eyes. Pitch black, they looked lifeless. Kai was frozen in fear, trembling in his seat. "W-Who are you?"

The man tilted his head to the side, almost like a confused puppy, and he raised his hand.

"You want money? I've got money," Kai reached for his wallet and he noticed that the window was open. That must have been how the man got in. The man had stopped smiling, and he shook his head.

"I want your light."

Kai almost screamed. The stranger's mouth hadn't moved. He had heard the voice inside his head. It was at this moment that the man snapped his fingers, and everything went dark. All the power in the house went out, and even the computer turned off. The only light was from the moonlight outside, and Kai watched as the curtains shut themselves, plunging the room into darkness.

At this point Kai was almost having a panic attack. Darkness was the one thing he was afraid of. Going outside at night? No. The moon gave him enough light. It was the pitch black dark that he was afraid of. Dark like this. Dark where you couldn't see your hand right in front of your face. That was the kind of dark that was happening then. He had nyctophobia, and he had known since he was little.

As he was sitting there, he felt a hand touch his face. I've been watching you, little light. You thought you could blend in with the mortals, but your light shines bright. It's a shame, really, that you picked the wrong side.

"What sides? I haven't done anything, you've got the wrong guy!" Kai was confused and terrified. He felt like a character in a book, but he knew that there weren't readers hoping for him to live, and an author helping them, if this strange man wanted "his light" then there was nothing he could do about it. He was about to speak again when the cool metal of a blade was pressed into the side of his cheek. He gulped. "Please don't hurt me."

You took any chance of mercy away when you joined them. He sounded furious. Don't worry I'll make it slow and painful.

Kai opened his mouth to scream at the same time the blinding light flew in through the window.
