Ronnie woke up at exactly 5:30 AM, her conscious tearing her out of the nightmares she'd been having. The nightmares were frequent, and she always found it amazing how he managed terrorizing her from afar, she wasn't even safe in her dreams. She showered, humming lightly to John Mayer's "Gravity", before blow drying her hair into her natural red waves. Today was her first day at Starbucks, and tomorrow she would start her first day at University. She was settling into her new life, sighing from relief every time she woke up, knowing she was unreachable from his grasp. She was tainted, shattered, nearly ruined, but she'd got out just in time. She would never let another man hurt her the way he did, and with her new found London life, she finally had hope.
As she exited her apartment and made her way to her new job, she went over all the lessons from training and the notes she'd highlighted in her employee handbook. When she entered, she was greeted by her boss, an extremely outgoing, slightly overweight woman of late 30's, Tammy.
"Hi darling, welcome to your first day!" She said, loud as ever, knocking Ronnie's previous thoughts out of her head. "MITCH, JAMIE, Get in here! meet your new co worker!" A man of mid twenties with blond, styled tips and bright blue eyes walked in, jokingly shoving a smaller and younger girl with jet black hair and dark eyes.
"This is Veronica Adams, our newest employee! Make friends while I do bossy stuff." Trish said, the words rushing on top of another.
"Don't let her fool you, she does nothing!" The boy said jokingly, earning a swat on the head from Trish. "Hi, I'm Mitchell, nice to meet you miss Veronica, welcome aboard the crazy train." He said, smiling widely, showing off his perfect teeth, then began choo-chooing, adding a wink at the end.
"I actually go by Ronnie, nice to meet you though Mitchell" Ronnie said, giggling and finally letting go of the tense grip she had on all of her muscles, she could already tell she wouldn't have the pressure to be perfect here.
" Hi girlfriend! I'm Jamie, but you can call me J. Ronnie's an awesome name, what's with the accent where are you from?" The girl said excitedly, shaking her short hair across her shoulders.
"Boston" She said, hating her accent even more in London.
"Boston that's so cool! What brings you here?" J said, eager to know more about Ronnie.
"I just needed to get away" Ronnie said, shaking her head and nervously biting her lip.
Mitchell's eyes filled with concern, then he said "I know that feeling, now tie that gorgeous hair in a bun and let's get to work!
------------------------------------------------------------
Ronnie was already enjoying her first day, she'd learned a few recipes and was getting the hang of things quickly. She picked up a discarded tray, throwing it in the trash and returning to the table to clean it off. She was a perfectionist, and had been busy cleaning and rearranging for the past twenty minutes, making everything OCD-friendly on her path. The bell chimed to signal another customer as she starting scrubbing coffee remains off yet another table, this place was awfully busy for 6:30 AM.
"Mr.Styles, a Chai Tea Latte, two shots of espresso and a Banana muffin, or are you switching it up today." Ronnie overheard Mitch say.
"Not switching, same as always. Can you make it quick I've got a meeting to go to." The man said, clipped and unfriendly.
She ignored the rest of the conversation as she finished her last table, singing lightly to herself as she turned for the back room to rinse off the dirty rag. She spun and collided directly into a big, hard body. She immediately turned red, stammering apologies.
"Are you kidding me? I've got a meeting to go to and YOU just spilled my drink all over me. Thank you so much, next time watch where you're walking." He shouted, pushing his curly hair from his for head and standing dominantly over her.
Her eyes filled with tears, her ruby lips shaking, unable to form a sentence to explain her shame. She watched his blue-green eyes darken with anger, reminding her far too much of her past. He grumbled, yelling "Why are you standing there, go get me a napkin!" As he raised his hand to point towards the napkin dispenser, she flinched, ducking her head and covering her face, shielding herself from him.
"What the hell is wrong with you? I'm not going to hit you! Jesus, forget it, I'll clean myself up." He said, still extremely angry at the Chai latte spilled down his Armani suit. She raised her head to find him staring at her, his face hard as stone. His jaw was clenched, his neck veins were showing, and he kept running his hands through his unruly locks, breathing heavily. Her past flashed in her mind, and the tears brimming her eyes began streaming down her face. As Mr. Styles walked around her towards the napkins, she swiftly turned, running and locking herself in the bathroom.
As J pounded on the door, telling Ronnie it was alright, "don't be worried", "that's just how Harry Styles is", "It wasn't your fault" Ronnie didn't want to hear any of it. Her past had flashed in front of her, and she was stupid to think she could escape it. She would never be worth anything, and she was sure plenty of people, including Harry Styles, would make her well aware of it.
