I looked in the mirror at myself: my hair was parted wrong, my eyes were red, and marks from my pillow lined my cheek.

"Ugh, I look awful." I said while combing out my tangled hair, "Why do I have to wake up at six?!"

Alice, my mysterious roommate/best friend for ever and ever, sat on her bed and filed her perfect fingernails, "Rhea, you look wonderful for only five hours of sleep."

I laughed, "Sure I do."

She stood up from the bed and put her hands on my head, "Girl, don't you want to look professional for your job interview?"

"I guess."

"Well, you should let me curl your hair!" She twisted a strand of my brown hair around her finger.

I looked at her reflection in the mirror, "I suppose I'll have time for that."

Alice squealed, "Yes, I get to style that beautiful hair of yours!"

I giggled, she always made me laugh. I handed Alice the curler, and my phone rang. Who could that be at six-thirty in the morning? I answered it, "Hello?"

"Oh, hi sweetie!" a familiar voice called.

"Mom?"

"Yes Rhea, this is your mother. I just wanted to say hello and ask how things were going living on your own and all." She said calmly.

"Mom, I'm not on my own, I have Alice here with me."

Alice leaned towards the phone, "Hi Mrs. Lyle!"

When Alice leaned forward, she accidentally bumped the hot curler on my scalp, "OW, OW, OUCH!" I screamed.

"Honey! What happened?!" Mom yelled sounding worried.

I rubbed my head "Ah, nothing Mom. Alice just bumped me with the hair curler."

"Oh, you guys be careful there." She warned us, "No funny business."

I grabbed my mascara, "Mom, 'funny business'?"

"Anyway, Rhea, remember that your father and I will be dropping by next Monday for dinner." She said going off-topic.

"Yea, I wouldn't miss it for the world."

Mom chucked, "Show us those great cooking skills of yours!"

"Ha ha." I laughed, Mom always joked about my awful cooking, "I'll try not to burn the chicken!"

"Okay, well I have to go, love ya!" She made a kissing sound.

"Mwah!" I pretended to blow a kiss. I hung up and looked at myself in the mirror. I had beautiful, long curls down to my shoulders.

"Wow, thanks Alice." I turned around to compliment her. She wasn't there. "Alice? I said thanks!" No reply. Where was she? Had she snuck out again? I shrugged and walked over to my dresser.

I found a teal knee-length dress and some black pumps. I applied the finishing touches to my makeup and walked over to the front door. As I picked up my black jacket, I noticed a sticky note on the door. I read it:

"Hey girl, Alice here, so I had to skedaddle and pick up some groceries. We needed some bread and yogurt. Anyhow, have a whopper of a time at your job interview! P.S. Sorry 'bout that burn to the scalp earlier! :O"

I rolled my eyes, Alice always acted way too perky when she was hiding something. I pulled the note off and tossed it in the trash. I grabbed an apple off the counter and put it in my purse before leaving for the interview.

While I was in the car driving, I noticed a girl wearing a blue hoodie walking out of an alley with her head down. She had platinum blonde hair with dark roots and bright pink streaks. That had to be Alice. Who else had that colorful hair? Just to be sure, I pulled over on the street and turned onto the back alley way. Sure enough there was that girl, she took off her hood, looked around and ran behind a building.

I sat in my car speechless, that was Alice. I knew it. I looked at my phone: 7:51. I would be late for my appointment if I followed her. I reluctantly turned around and drove back onto the main street.
