Jennie's POV
I wake up coughing again but this time, i look at my hand and see red liquid dripping from it. My throat is raw. My chest rattles. The air in the room is thin, stale, full of quiet sickness and too many unspoken things. I know i was getting worse, i'm just not ready yet.
Across the hall, behind another closed door, Jisoo is sick too.
They told us not to stay in the same house. The doctors looked at us like we were naive, reckless, stupid in love.
"You both need isolation," they said.
"You can't afford more exposure," they warned.
"Keep distance. No contact. Separate rooms. No exceptions."
But we only had each other. What were we supposed to do, die alone?
So we stayed. But we stayed apart.
Yes, We are alone, but at-least we are alone together.
It's been nineteen days.
Nineteen days since I've touched her. Nineteen days of aching to hold her but staying behind this door like a coward. Nineteen days since i got to taste her sweet lips.
Some days, I press my ear to the wall. I hear her cough. Sometimes, I hear her cry.
And that breaks me more than the illness ever could.
Today, like most days, we video call each other from our rooms. It's a cruel joke, so close, yet pixels apart.
She's paler than before. Her lips are chapped. Her voice is quieter now.
"You ate?" I ask, voice shaking.
"A little soup," she lies. I know she lies. I do, too.
Silence stretches.
Then she says it, eyes glassy, voice barely a whisper:
"I'm scared, love."
My throat closes. "Me too."
"I don't want to go without... touching you. Without hearing your heartbeat again. Without one last kiss."
I nod, my own tears falling freely now. I hide them behind my sleeve.
"i'd give up forever " I whisper, "to touch you."
⸻
Jisoo's POV
The house is quiet.
Too quiet.
You'd think a house with two people who love each other this much would be full of laughter, soft kisses, shared songs. But it's not. It's cold. It's sterile. It smells like alcohol pads, eucalyptus, and loneliness.
Every time I hear Jennie cough, sometimes even throw up, something inside me breaks. I know she's holding back her crying, her pain, her fear.
We agreed to stay in separate rooms. It was the only way to lessen the risk, to make sure we didn't make things worse.
But the truth is... it hasn't made anything better.
We're still dying.
We're just dying apart.
⸻
Tonight, I can't take it anymore. My chest is tight again, not just from the sickness, but from this unbearable distance.
I leave my room.
I walk barefoot on the cold tiles.
I knock once on her door, soft as I can.
No answer. I knock again.
She opens it.
She's in an oversized hoodie. Her eyes are puffy. Her lips part when she sees me, like she wants to tell me to go back. But she doesn't.
She just stares. And then she breaks.
We collide. A trembling, desperate embrace. Like the universe is cracking open just to let us fall into each other one last time.
⸻
Jennie's POV
She smells like lavender. Her body is warmer than I remember. Or maybe I'm just colder.
Our arms wrap around each other like muscle memory.
God, I missed this. Her skin, her scent, the rhythm of her breathing. We don't say anything. There are no words for this kind of ache.
she buries her head in my neck, releasing a sigh. half relief, half in pain.
Her hand slides up my nape, and for the first time in weeks, my bones stop shaking.
We sink into the couch together, limbs tangled like we never want to be apart again. We choose a movie we both love, Bring it on, our comfort film, but we barely watch.
Our hands roam like explorers trying to memorize familiar land one last time.
Her fingers trace my jaw, the curve of my ear. My lips brush her collarbone making their way up her neck. She sighs, in mourning. In gratitude.
"I forgot how warm you are," she says.
I hold her closer.
"I forgot how much I need you like this."
⸻
Jisoo's POV
We talk about everything and nothing. Childhood memories. The first time we kissed. That rainy night we adopted our dog. We pretend we'll have a tomorrow, even though our bodies are betraying us by the hour.
Then she kisses me again.
It's soft and trembling. Our lips fit like puzzle pieces. Familiar.
When i felt her pulling away, i pulled her even closer. kissing her hungrily.
There's no rush.
I slowly undress her as she does the same, Skin to skin, breath to breath. She lays her head on my chest, and I run my fingers through her hair like I used to when she couldn't sleep.
Outside, the world keeps spinning. The world doesn't care that we're in love.
But in here, there's only us. Only the warmth of her touch. Only the calm of her heartbeat slowing with mine.
We lie in bed under the same blanket for the first time in weeks. I turn my face toward her and kiss the corner of her mouth.
"You know," i say, barely audible, "if this is the last night..."
she don't let me finish.
she press her forehead to mine. "Then I'm glad I spent it like this."
⸻
Jennie's POV
I feel it coming. The stillness. The lightheaded calm that doesn't feel like calm.
She's still awake beside me. Her hand is curled against my neck.
I kiss her knuckles.
"I love you," I whisper.
She breathes out, a soft exhale against my cheek. "I love you more."
Our last words.
In the Morning
The sun rises slowly. The curtains shift with the wind.
Two bodies lie in bed, limbs gently intertwined. Eyes closed. Faces peaceful.
No coughing. No pain.
Just silence.
And stillness.
And love.
They are found like that, facing each other, holding hands, lips almost touching.
Together.
Always.
Even in the end.
