The sun was dipping under the horizon leaving an array of orange colors dancing in the sky. A wide field displayed across the land, the green grass ran for what seemed miles. In the middle of the field lied a herd of horses, all of them lying their heads to rest. One young filly however was wide awake, she couldn't possibly sleep when the sun hadn't even set yet. She lied against her mothers cream flank with wide blue eyes, she didn't even want to sleep yet. In her head she imagined running into the river below the hill far away, she missed it there where she used to live.

On the top of her head she felt a long lick against her chocolate brown mane that happened to match her mothers. Peering above from where her head was now wet she saw her mom staring gently down at her with an endearing stare. The young filly restlessly shifted in the itchy grass and her mother chuckled at the little display.

The larger horse nudged her gently with her snout, "What is the matter my little Pea?"

"I can't sleep mama, not when the sun isn't even asleep yet!" The filly named Pea replied.

"Oh my dear little one, we're traveling a long distance tomorrow you need your rest" She licked her softly again to soothe the child.

Pea didn't want to take this answer and she huffed, "Can you tell me a story mama?"

Gazing down at her baby she smiled, "I guess one story won't hurt. I will tell you about the Queen in the sun and her encounter with Death."

"That sounds scary!" The little filly squealed.

"Now, now, my dear I promise it is not scary" The horse consoled Pea while staring at the sunset, "A long time ago the Queen was very young and naive, her father the king was going to take his place in the stars giving the throne to his daughter. However he had a warning before he left, that she was to never leave the clouds, and never talk to Death. The two most powerful opposites were not to meet, as she was a the bearer of life and he the one of death."

Pea scooted in closer laying her head onto her mothers flank. The older much wiser mare gazed down with loving brown eyes, Pea seemed to be so comfortable in her company. Yawning in deeply Pea began to close her eyes to listen to her moms sweet voice into the night.

"The newly dubbed Queen disobeyed him in her own curiosity, she flew down one night into the green world we live in. Once arrived she was amazed by the looming trees and beautiful forest" The horse continued in a soft voice, "However not far from where she had been she heard crying, a young filly was born but her father was dying and Death had come to put him to sleep. Not being able to distance herself the Queen followed closely to him. However Death was very wise and could sense her presence."

Pea's eyes shot open and she stared at her mom, "He didn't hurt her did he?"

"No my dear, in fact he was so captivated by her beauty that he fell in love with her" The cream colored horse confirmed to her daughter.

Pea tilted her head with confusion, "That sounds so nice!"

"Indeed it does my little one, but their powers were so opposite that things began to fall apart after some time" She explained while gazing into the sky once more, "The Queen was no longer in love with Death, and she grew gravely afraid of his dark power. She did not understand the circle of life, and was torn by how Death had put so many to sleep. One night Death was frustrated knowing that she was not the same, in his fear of losing her he grew angry and his love flew away in tears."

Shuffling her hooves Pea imagined the great Death looming powerful over the land, and the beauty of the queen of the sun. She could see them dancing in her head infatuated with each other, but slowly being torn away. The thought made her upset, she wished that everyone could feel loved and happy. Laying her head on the ground Pea continued to listen.

"Death was regretful for his rage and tried to chase after her but she was long gone. On the other side of the world she flew and cried by closely to a clear lake. An old friend of hers had saw her crying and flew down, he was in charge of weather and wondered why she was upset" Her mother told with her body in a comforting curl, "Quickly he swept her off of her feet, they fell in love being so close to each other already, and they kissed. However they were not alone, Death had caught up and was infuriated by what he had witnessed, his only love tore his heart out. In his misery he destroyed the entire forest turning it into sand."

The sounds of wind whistled into Pea's ear and she painted the picture in her head of a sandy desert. Cracks within the earth separated the two and Pea could see both the horse death and the queen of the sun standing on ends with each other. A searing sun heated down onto her imagination, making her feel intensely hot. By this time she was slipping into slumber, the magical world her mother had sculpted lingering in her mind.

"Death was so furious he threatened to destroy every last piece of life as revenge for her treachery. The queen terrified stood her ground saying that he could not punish a world for such jealousy. As much as she tried he was too heart broken to listen, the queen was forced to use all of her magic to trap Death into the underworld for two thousand years. However it was at cost, she lost her magic..." She sighed with a long yawn, "Some say in two thousand years Death will come back with the horses of the apocalypse, and he will reap the world of all life."

The mother peered down to see her daughter fast asleep pelted into her cream spotted flank. Smiling so laid down as well rest her neck nearby her child, she snored so peacefully. Closing her eyes she began to slumber and the night sky sparkled above them, the world was at peace.
