It was nearly sundown. Where was he? You knew Michael was cautious but he never cut it this close and you were getting nervous. You, and what you called your "band of misfits", set up camp in the middle of the city. It was risky, but with your camp being high you always had the upper hand on the zombies. Well, "zombies", would technically be correct. The virus had wiped out so much of the population on it's own but the ones who survived, well you wouldn't exactly call it living. Their milky eyes and festering skin weren't even the worst part. The worst part was how their brains turned to mush. As a result of said mushy brains their only priority was to spread the virus. The virus wasn't airborne, thank God, but there were other ways of course. The most popular being biting. One slobbering bite was all it took. It wasn't airborne, but God was it powerful.
"Jalan atthirari anni" the greeting meaning "moon of my life" in the Dothraki language from Game Of Thrones was how Michael always announced himself after being out all day. You wrapped your arms around him and gave the reply,
"Shekh ma shieraki anni" it meant "my sun and stars" and that's truly what he was to you, he was your morning sun and you nightly stars. Aside from Hal, the ten year old who had found your camp after her parents had been killed, Michael was all you had. You didn't know what you'd do without him.
"Oh yeah," with that you gave him a smack to the back of the head.
"Ow! What the hell?"
"That's for cutting it so close! Dammit, Michael, you know how dangerous it gets after the sun sets!" you were angry, but only because he had caused you so much worry.
"Babe, I'm sorry." He pulled you to him and rested his head on yours. "You know I wasn't trying to freak you out. I was just trying to get as many supplies as I could. That way I wouldn't have to leave you again for a while."
You stood on your tiptoes to kiss him, then settled back into his arms. You were all safe and secure.
At least for now.
