My next door neighbour, Ms Andrews', fence is knocked down and it looks like someone has tried to jump over it but it has snapped revealing sharp, pointy edges where the fence has been broken. But that isn't the worst part, its Ms Andrews... She doesn't look like the sweet, old lady she was yesterday, not under any circumstances.
How she should look is for her to be wearing a light blue night gown, her thin, grey-white hair permed on top of her head, with soft fluffy slippers on her feet. Instead, her pyjamas are covered in a dark red substance which I'd hate to say it, but it looks like blood. Her hair has fallen from her perm and strands of her hair have fallen in front of her ridiculously white eyes and she is hobbling towards me.
"Sarah, get in the car and close your eyes!" I tell my sister, opening the door for her.
Ms Andrews doesn't seem to see the fence in front of her and keeps walking towards the sharp spear-like points where the poles of the fence have split.
"Ms Andrews!! Stop!" I scream out, but she doesn't stop, she makes a strange growling sound and continues to walk towards me, arms outstretched and confronting gaze upon me. I quickly pace towards her and as I get closer I notice a deep, painful looking tear in the flesh on her arm, I can see an ivory looking colour stained in red, and I have come to the conclusion that it's her bone.
"Janette! The fence!" I yell, reaching my arm out to her but it's too late, the bent fence squeezes through her stomach with a slush, red blood oozes from the injury, and runs slowly down the pole of the fence. She is still looking directly at me with a fixed gaze and outstretched arms.
It can't be... Wouldn't be... undead?
"Quickly get in the car!" Mum says pointing her hand up the street.
I turn my head to where her shaking arm is signalling, half of our street is waltzing towards us, blood covered, flesh revealed and all making this horrid gargling sound, like gluggghhhh. It's really irritating.
I run to our car and open the passenger seat door. Mum is already seated and strapped into the drivers' seat next to me. She puts the key near the ignition, her hands shaking uncontrollably.
"Mum, hurry, they're coming!" I say panicked.
"I know, I know!" She says back, eyes tearing up.
She gets the key in the keyhole and the car roars to life. She puts the car in reverse and we roll away from the catastrophe that is my childhood home.
"What the hell was that?!" I ask confused.
"That's what this is... this...this sickness." My Mum says wiping the tears from her eyes.
We reach an open road, and there are no people, cars or monsters in sight. Even though there is nothing around us I am slightly concerned. I turn my head sideways to my Mum who is crying. We are currently driving at around 70km/h on a 40km zone. I can see the confused, yet frustrated look on my Mothers usually relaxed face.
"Mum pull over, give yourself a minute to calm down, or at least slow down a little" I say with an understanding tone.
"No. I need to get you and your sister out of here." She says determined.
"Well there's no use in doing that if we get pulled over or hurt someone in the making." I say, now raising my voice slightly.
"I'm not pulling over Erica." My Mum says back to me sternly.
"But we are going too fast-"
Before I can finish my sentence a man starts walking onto the road. Mum slams on her breaks but she loses control of the car. Sarah screams, the tires screech and we hit the 'man' in front of us, who is actually one of those bastards. We spin out and crash into nearby tree.
I jerk forwards with the cars sudden stop.
All I see is darkness.
Everything is blurry and I can't see much as I open my eyes but I do see a lot of red, which makes me nervous. I hear a soft, high pitched voice from behind me, but I can't make out words. I blink a few times and step into reality.
"Erica? Erica wake up please." I hear Sarah say in a shaky voice.
"Sarah?" As soon as I sit up an intense booming runs through my head. "Sarah, are you okay?" I ask my sister.
"Yeah, but Mummy won't move and the cars weird and I'm scared." She says with a single tear running down her cheek.
"What?!" I say tuning my head to look around. The car is nearly upside down . But then I look sideways and understand what all the red was about. My Mum must have hit her head on the steering wheel when we crashed because there is blood everywhere.
"Mum?! Oh my god!!" I say panicked fussing with my seatbelt and slowly, but surely, making my way over to my injured mother.
Once I have untangled myself from the twisted belt, I move my Mother's body so she faces me, but as I do this, there is a large split on her hairline that runs across the top of her forehead. The split reveals her cracked skull and blood begins to drip down her face.
"Is Mummy okay?" Sarah asks concerned.
"Uh... I don't know Sarah, just give me a minute." I tell her, knowing that she is most probably gone.
I reach over my Mum's cold body and take her phone out of her right pocket. I dial the phone to get an ambulance but there is no signal. I unlock the door and stand outside, trying to get a signal, but it's no use.
I walk over to the side of the car that my Mum is seated on and open the door. The split in her forehead is a lot more confronting from this angle.
What do I do?
I kneel down on the ground next to my Mum's limp body and place my hand on her wrist, trying to find a pulse, only problem is, I don't know what the hell I'm doing. We are stuck on an open road, with no one around and my Mum is out cold, maybe even dead.
"Erica?"
I hear a familiar female voice from behind me. I turn my head see who is standing over me. I stand up and realise who it is who has come to the rescue.
