"Oh thank god! Can you please help us?! We were driving and we crashed, my younger sister is in the back seat, my Mum is hurt and it's getting dark. I don't know what to do." I tell Mrs Yez, showing my vulnerability. Oh, by the way, Mrs Yez is my school nurse. My saviour.
Mrs Yez takes over my spot on the ground and kneels next to my Mum. She then places two fingers on my Mothers neck, like they do in movies. Finally, someone who knows what to look for.
"Erica... Erica I'm so sorry." Mrs Yez says to me in a sympathetic voice.
"No... No this can't be happening." I say back to her in disbelief, tears welling up in my eyes.
"There's nothing we can do."
At that point, I burst into tears. I haven't cried this much since my Dad got diagnosed. By the time it got to his funeral, I was well out of tears. I drop to the ground and just cry, I feel so helpless.
"Why don't you girls come with me, you'll be a lot safer. Come on." She says with big eyes.
"What if she's alive, and we leave her here alone? And safer from what exactly?!" I say back rousing at her, my face screwed up and tears streaking my face.
"She isn't Erica, I promise you that, and those, THINGS roaming around, they aren't... they aren't people" Miss says back frowning.
"What is that supposed to mean?!" I scream at her.
"They eat flesh. I've seen it. All I want right now, is for you girls to be alive and breathing. So, what do you say? Are you coming?" She puts her hand out to me to help me up.
"Well we're gonna have to aren't we?" I say in a shocked yet ignorant tone, scoffing at her help and lifting myself up. I probably shouldn't have done that, no one else is offering to save my life right now.
I walk back over to the car and take the keys out of the ignition to open the boot. I look for all of the bags that have mine or Sarah's possessions in it and place all bags that I can carry in the back of Mrs' car, taking Sarah with me.
"Thank you Miss." I tell her as a form of apologizing about how I acted earlier.
"Just call me Anne." She says back with a smile.
I take the last bag from the back of our destroyed car and close the boot. I look back over to my Mum and start to cry again.
"Mummy?" That's when I hear Sarah start sobbing and hiccupping in the way that she does as she runs over to my Mum. I drop the bag and swiftly run over to her and hug her tightly.
"Everything is going to be okay." I say shushing my sister and stroking her hair. I feel her tears dropping onto my shirt.
This is going to be a long night.
