Melanie knew it was wrong, but she couldn't help herself and her heart was thumping with excitement. Her father had told her many times not to talk to strangers. She had heard the stories, how they were evil people that carried little girls far away from home.

But there was the lure of the forbidden, the rush that a child could only get by doing something they had been expressly told not to do. And she was a big girl now, almost seven!

She shyly edged closer to the man. He had been calling to her for some time now. Pale and skinny, he looked very nervous. The sweat beading on his forehead was clearly visible, as were several missing teeth when he smiled. He held out a hand towards her.

'Come here little girl. i just need some help, okay?'

Melanie was fascinated by the man's bright red hair; she tiptoed a couple of steps closer.

The man leaned towards her, and his rank scent washed over Melanie. He smelt like rotting food and the restrooms at school. She danced backwards out of his reach and scampered away, her bravery quickly abandoning her. As she ran, the man shouted desperately after her, but could hardly follow with his legs shackled.

Her thirst for adventure sated, she turned off the single lightbulb and started climbing out of the basement. Behind her, the man started to scream.
